[NEW EPISODE] Jackie Chan's Kung Fu is "Fake" and That's Okay | Video Essay

Here's an episode about topics that everyone wants to talk about.

One thing to note is that I didn't bring up the influence of politics. Yes, we are all thinking of the same event.

That's because the policies for and against Chinese martial art was convoluted one. I couldn't find a lot of detail records about martial art policies during the Qing dynasty (when Beijing Opera were born). Without context, it's hard to conclude how much damage different policies did.

At the end of the day, Mainland Wushu and Hong Kong Kung Fu are in very similar state, so I guess politics doesn't have that much of a direct effect anyway.

I hope you enjoy this episode! And once again, thank you for supporting the channel through Patreon! See you on the next episode! Looks like it's going to be Wandering Earth.

I love your distinction between being a good combat fighter vs a screen fighter, and how even though the skills seem transferable, there is still a specific way of training required. I agree whole heartedly that kung fu does a piss poor job of marketing itself correctly - I just hope in the future, people understand that wushu/kungfu can be viewed in a "performing arts" category, with it's roots in martial application, but itself not a combat art. Some parallels I can draw is, being into cardistry/magic, but not necessarily competent in card gambling. Or being into martial arts tricking, but not necessarily being very good at any one martial art. You can be a harlem globetrotter but only decent at the game of basketball, hell, you can be AMAZING at a speedbag but be a really terrible boxer. Anyways, just some of my brainfarts after watching this video again. Thanks for all the great content!
