[NEW EPISODE] Sholay: Appreciating an Epic Masala | Video Essay

Took my forever to cover a Hindi movie but here we are, one of the best and certainly the most epic and badass movie in any cinema: Sholay.

In this episode, we learn to appreciate the masala film genre. One thing I didn't mention, is that I have a sneaking suspicion that, the masala genre has much further reaching impact that one may think.

Before this film leads masala into the mainstream, genre in Hong Kong cinema is fairly well split. Kung Fu movies are badass Comedy movies are all about the jokes.

After Sholay, however, pretty much every Hong Kong blockbusters have some cross genre elements to it. Action has comedy. Romcom can have a Chinese zombie in it. A period piece can have song and dance humour. It's Hong Kong masala.

And maybe, just maybe, it's not a coincident.
