Alright, I'm back. That was an exhausting month, but things so go back to normal this September, updates should be regular, and episode teases should go up on the channel community tabs as usual.
- Reminder that Episode 21 is coming up this Thursday. Patrons who pledge 10$ per month can take a look at the script right now.
- It's also the first episode on this channel that is sponsored. I guess I'm a real YouTuber, now.
- Script for bonus video is done, but I haven't have time to record it just yet.
- It's about BlacKkKlansman and how it attempts to destroy the language of racism from the foundation, along with some small talk on how easy it is to mis-interpret a movie.
- By the nature of the film, it's a bit of a political video. Let me know how you feel about it. It's probably not going to be a regular thing regardless.
- Finally, I'll start writing episode 22 in the next few days.
- I'm thinking of a Bruce Lee two-part Retrospective.
So what's going on outside the channel?
- After Tremors, I'm in a bit of a mood for Bacon. So I watched another Kevin Bacon flick, Flatliners, the 1990 original.
- And turns out, it's one of those movies that I have no idea if I like it or not... It's hard to explain.
- It's a movie about a group of medical students who repeatedly put each other into near-death states to find out what is beyond death. And the comfort of that experience, plus the excitement of discovery proven dangerously addictive.
- The film has this clearly intentional yet nevertheless unusual pacing. I never really got to know each characters and my attention drifts in and out throughout the movie. It's dream-like, as if I'm watching someone's afterlife. And when the movie was over, it felt like I woke up from a dream, and my mind quickly forgot many of the details.
- Still, what remains is the unforgettable art direction and cinematography. This is, quite unexpectedly, a gothic horror film. The medical experiments, despite done with modern equipment, felt very much like Victorian mad science.
- It's reminiscent of the Frankenstein series from Hammer Film Productions. There is something gracefully barbaric about repeatedly putting people to death and bringing them back to life. It's sacrilegious, it's conceptually unsettling.
Well, that's a lot of thoughts for a Kevin Bacon movie. I also rewatched Emperor's New Groove on the plane. Didn't like it much as a child, still didn't like it much as an adult. John Goodman is a real treasure, though.
September continues to be a boring month in the theatres. But October has Joker and Gemini Man, which I'll more than likely see them in theatres.
Oh Ang-Lee and Will Smith, please do not disappoint.
I'll see you Thursday.
