[Weekly Update] April 6th, 2020

Well, it has been a couple of weeks since our last update, although content is pretty constant. I hope you'll forgive me for skipping a week.
ABOUT THE CHANNEL
- I hope you all enjoyed the April fools video on Minecraft. Before studying cinema, I went to a local college to study game design, so I actually have a lot to say about video games, as well.
- Fun fact: All the footage used in the episode is captured with the internal video share on a Nintendo Switch, which explains why shots look so compressed. Doesn't help that Minecraft is not the most visually appealing game. There I said it.
- Some commenters requested more Accented Gaming videos in the future. I won't rule out the possibility entirely, but without a capture card, there are limited things I can do, and honestly, I think we are all here for film related contents, anyway.
- Speaking of which, Our next episode is now in the scripting phase. Looks like Ip Man 4 barely edged out John Woo by one vote! I guess we'll be talking about what internalized racism is in 2 weeks!
- Either way, if you still crave for more content (I know I do, thanks, quarantine), check out our latest bonus video on Nick Cage in Color Out of Space.
ABOUT MEDIA
- Speaking of Color Out of Space, let's talk about it.
- Color Out of Space is a movie I would recommend, despite it not being a very good movie.
- Between everyone I talked to, the consensus is that this film is, for inexplicable reasons, enjoyable despite all the short comings.
- The film is slow, and events are loosely connected. It has very little flow. Every scene feels like a snapshot moments on its own, instead of continuing what was set up in the last scene. It meanders, not so much as building tension, as much as it is building a mood. And it kinda works.
- The cinematography is borderline pompous. Many shots look beautiful, but not always appropriate. Many compositions look like it fits better in a music video or a montage sequence, often lack intimacy.
- The best reasoning I can offer on why this film still feels enjoyable, is that there is clear passion behind it.
- The filmmaker went out of their way to insert a lot of thematically appropriate elements into the visual design, even if the meanings aren't always clear. From Lavinia's crazy color hair, to her triangle hairpin that matches the attic window. To using warm lighting indoor to contrast the color that came from space. They are simple choices, obvious choices, but details like these are numerous. There is effort in it.
- Speaking of the daughter Lavinia, the name is taken from another Lovecraft story "The Dunwich Horror". Clearly, the filmmakers did their homework and tried their best to do Lovecraft's work justice.
- It would not surprised me if Nick Cage is a Lovecraft fan, too. The effort he puts in this is felt throughout. You can see him takes this role seriously, much more so than most of his other roles, where he is simply having fun.
- It's unfortunate that this film didn't succeed. There is virtually no advertisement campaign, and released with so little fanfare. The name "Lovecraft" probably doesn't carry nearly as much value outside of the specific subculture.
- But I think you don't have to be a Lovecraft fan to enjoy this film. If, like me, you want to see more passion projects like this one, support the movie, give it a watch. And while you are at it, tell me what you think about the film!
Well, that'll be all for the update. I decided to take out the life update part, unless something significant has happened. Life is kinda the same everyday right now.
And just a reminder, quarantine only begins to show its effectiveness at minimum 14 days later. Don't lose hope. We'll get through this, together.
Love you all.
