In case you didn't know, our latest video on Ip Man 4 has has been copyright claimed, removed, and our channel received a copyright strike as a result. A counter notice has been sent, but YouTube has yet to forward it. And considering YouTube is currently operating on minimal staff, it may take a while before it gets resolved.
I have also directly contacted the claimant, which has yet (and likely will not) respond.
I have no idea if this is a copyright claim from the production company that owns the right to Ip Man or not. The claim comes from a Turkish based media management company who specialized in removing online content. The claim did not offer any detail on which part of the video violates copyrights, and who's copyright the video was affecting.
There are a lot of speculation among our viewers that this may be an attack from... shall we say, people who disagree with our stance on racism. While not impossible, I find that scenario to be highly unlikely.
Either way, in the process of sending my counter notice, I'm basically exposing my address and phone number to the claimant. Let's see how that works out.
Thank you, YouTube, for putting content creator in a constant vulnerable position.
ABOUT THE CHANNEL
- On a lighter note: Our Channel officially hit 100k subscribers!
- Honestly, I was expecting about 5k for the first year and the channel will end afterward. The best I hoped was somehow the channel goes viral 3 years after its death. You proved me wrong.
- Some fans suggests doing a Q&A for celebration, which seems to be the standard thing to do on YouTube. So if you have any questions you'd like to ask me, comment below or send it my way.
- The Q&A video will be on the back burner and may take a few weeks to get done, if at all.
- For the next few episode, the channel we head towards a more lighthearted route. We'll be talking about good and escapist movies, and discuss topics that much more wholesome and fun. I think we have enough problems in real life, we all need a bit of levity.
ABOUT MEDIA
- So I watched the new Power Rangers movie. Yeah remember that? That was a thing wasn't it?
- It's a bad movie, that comes as no surprise.
- But it's also... not a terribly written movie. I feel like for all its flaws, most of them seem to be a production mistake, pacing, editing, special affects, design, acting, music... But the writing, it has heart.
- The film's main shinning spot, is character vulnerability.
- Unlike all the happy-go-lucky 28 year old teenagers from the original show, the 20 year old teens from this movie actually feels like teens, with a strong sense of morality... THEIR morality.
- Teenagers are during a critical period of their lives, where they began to questions the authorities, and forming their own moral codes. In most mainstream movies, the films view this as "rebellious phase" and the discussion pretty much ends.
- In other vapid teen movies like "Tall Girl" and "Swipe", the films' attempts to relate to teens is laughable at best, offensive at worse. A girl being too tall is the central conflict of "Tall Girl", how hollow can a movie be?
- Both of these types of movies came from the same place: They don't see teen problems as problems. They don't believe teenagers can have legit issues in life. They believe teens are just hormone driven emotional monsters that magnifies all problems, but the world is otherwise just.
- The Power Rangers movie did not share this view.
- Jason's friend got himself into trouble, in the process of helping his friend, Jason ruined his career as the future star quarterback of his city.
- Billy, a smart kid on the spectrum, has trouble making friends and are bullied by schoolmates and teachers. And yes, teachers can be bullies, too.
- Kimberly is a school bully who, after doing her terrible bullying act, unsure of how to face herself and be good again.
- Trini is a lesbian kid from a implied homophobic family who just wants her to be "normal"
- And Zack is a Chinese immigrant from a poor family, with a sick mother who can die at any day. Heavy stuff for a teenager to deal with.
- The fact that I remember all the characters by their names, traits, stories and weaknesses, speaks volumes about how strong the characterization is. These are real conflicts, troubles teens faces. The writer truly relates to high schoolers, respects them, and see things from their perspective. It understands that sometimes, the world is indeed wrong, and the teenagers are correct to have their own morality.
- With so many crappy teen films (especially those made by other YouTubers) out there that pretends to have a message, it's nice to see a film that actually cares about teenagers.
So, hope you are still doing well in this quarantine. I'll see you next episode with a film that you probably haven't seen before. It'll bring you a lot of joy and happiness, I promise.
