IMPORTANT: Patreon recently notified its users that, starting July 1st, it'll be applying sales tax to your pledges. The rules are dependent upon where individual patrons are located, so you may or may not be affected.
Patrons who are affected will see their pledge goes up. It is illegal (in the US) to set a price with sales tax included. That means the sales tax will be applied on top of your pledge.
Supposedly this only affects patrons who receives extra goodies. In our case, the script download and bonus video. If you pledge 1 or 3 dollars, I believe tax is exempted.
Anyway, please check with Patreon to see how it affects you.
ABOUT THE CHANNEL
- Our episode on Who Killed Captain Alex is gaining surprising amount of attention. It already surpassed the view count of our Heroine videos. That's unexpected, considering Captain Alex is a much easier episode for me to work on.
- Our channel is also growing at a rate faster than I can imagine, even if it's happening right in front of my eyes. If you are new to our Patreon page, welcome! You can find our bonus content by clicking "Bonus Video" somewhere on this page. (Patreon keeps moving them around)
- I still have two more feel good episodes coming up, hopefully they will continue to lift your spirits, even if just a little bit. The script for our next one is done. It'll be uploaded Monday.
ABOUT MEDIA
- In preparation for our next episode, I watched a lot of Children's horror media.
- While I enjoy most of them, with Hocus Pocus being an especially fun, none of them really comes close to scaring me. Of course, that isn't fair, since I don't get scare by horror films as an adult.
- But when I was a kid, I was obsessed with a manga series called Hell Teacher Nūbē. It legit scares me, and makes me afraid of the dark.
- It's a manga series about a teacher and his students, and their many encounters with ghosts and monsters, most of them Japanese, with some Chinese and Western monsters thrown in. There's even a story about Edward Scissorhands.
- If you did a quick google search, many of the images from this manga are very horrific. They are basically a time crunched version of Junji Ito.
- It's hard to even imagine this being a Shonen Manga. I doubt many would let their children read Junji Ito without a second thought. Yet here we have Hell Teacher, featuring similar artworks, being published on Shonen Jump.
- Oh and with hindsight, there are a lot of lewd content in this manga that's definitely not for children. So maybe don't actually show your kids. Show them the anime, though, it's less... inappropriate.
- With principal differences between Hell Teacher and all of Ito's work is a big part discussion on our next episode, so I won't go into much detail. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fit Hell Teacher into the episode discussion, so, I decided to bring it up here.
- Anyway, do you like horror media when you were a kid? What are some of the movies or books that left an impression on you?
ABOUT LIFE
- There's a joke on twitter about people wanting to bake bread at home, because how boring the quarantine is.
- I realized I'm at the next level boredom, when I have thoughts of starting a novel, even though I still have this channel to work on, and feature scripts I need to write.
- And I don't really read that much, which makes the entire idea even stranger.
- Yet the thought lingers. I have dreams of a strange setting that I can write. I have 4th-wall-breaking ideas for a format. I even consider writing a Chinese Wuxia novel aimed for a western audience.
- Should that happen, I'll probably post it somewhere for free. Not sure how many people are interested. But if this quarantine makes me crazy enough to try, I'll keep you updated. Don't judge me, though. I'm not a good novel writer, fair warning.
So that's it, a bit of a shorter update this week, since nothing much really happened.
Remember we have our bonus video for April, a critique on Cats, the monstrosity of a movie I saw in theatres. In any case, I'll see you in the next episode.
