[Weekly Update] June 2nd, 2020

Sorry about the late update! I have been struggling to write for the past two days... for obvious reasons. Viewers of the channel probably know I have strong opinions in regards to racism. Which is why the recent events affected me emotionally, more than I expected.
Anyway, I'm sure many of you didn't choose to financially support this channel only to be feed political discussions. So I'll cut my rant right here.
In any case, to our US viewers, stay safe.
ABOUT THE CHANNEL
- So our "feel good" series of video concluded with our last video on Whisper of the Heart. As always, I hope you enjoyed the episode.
- For our next few videos, we'll go back to our usual film analysis. one focus on storytelling, the other about visual aesthetics.
- I've been thinking of adjusting the channel's aesthetic once again. Long time viewers will know that originally this channel uses black on red as the main brand color. I eventually changed it to a more sleek Red on Black.
- Over the past few episodes, I've been experimenting with a more stylized typographical design, which sometimes includes some color. These designs are made to work with the film as the background. But their color clashes a lot with our black and red brand currently.
- So expect some changes to the motion graphics. Not sure when I'll get it done, but it will be changed eventually.
ABOUT MEDIA
- Originally for our bonus video last month, I was tempted to talk about the recent Sonic movie. But there isn't enough materials to make a 5 minute video, so I'll share my thought here instead.
- First, I'm so glad they changed Sonic's design. Upon reflect, I'm very certain that this film will be bashed to hell and back for being boring and uninspired, if Sonic's design remains horrific.
- The film can best be described as "A conventional road trip movie with some good humour thrown in". The film has a lot of good moments.
- The characters are likeable, for one. Usually in these road trip films, the main characters are irresponsible assholes, and the side kick is annoying idiots. Knowing Sonic's persona, he could've easily filled into both categories at once.
- Instead, both Sonic and James Marsden's Donut Lord are both sincere, earnest and loveable. They aren't amazing at anything, but they sure tried. It's almost like the characters I talked about in Mr. Vampire.
- The girlfriend character is cool, too. In most of these types of movie, I expect the girlfriend to be hysterical. Instead, she quickly understands the situation and helps out. There is a hysterical character, but she is played for laugh, and the joke lands more often than not. It's great.
- However, none of these shinning spot would matter, if the Sonic redesign didn't happen.
- To paraphrase, If you throw a cup of piss into a bowl of soup, you have a bowl of piss.
- If you throw a cup of soup into a bowl of piss, you have a bow of piss.
- The worst part of the film will dictates how audience perceive the rest of the movie. That's a thing I did not realize until the Sonic movie came out.
- Should Sonic remains a hellspawn, I would've instead focuses on the cring-y humour, complain about Sonic doing the floss dance. I would focus on how the emotion in the film feel contrived instead of sincere. How the road trip format is uninspired and doesn't fit the character of sonic.
- These flaws either disappear or become irrelevant, for the simple fact that Sonic is cute.
- That's... weird?
So that's this week's update. I hope you all have a safe week.
