In my mind, this might be the best Zhang Yimou movie yet, certainly his best blockbuster for sure. Rewatching his works since Hero makes me realize how much his style matured over the years. His style in Hero feels pretty derivative and shallow (beautiful as the result maybe), and his style in Golden Flower is so pompous it makes me irrationally angry... But this, oh man. This is good.
