I've been researching for a "watercolor" (oily?) shader since 2019. It's nothing new, but commissions, work, family and daily life happen, and we're closing 2021 with this shader almost completed, finally!
In other words, it's been a fantastic opportunity to share this shader with you!. But what's going to set it apart from other shaders online that look similar? Answer: The fact that we are going to be using 1 special addon that smears vectors (procedural shaders) using a "flow map".
This concept is CRUCIAL for anyone who's doing painterly effects since traditional paint medium (like gouache, watercolor, etc..) always accumulate material strokes depending on the speed and direction.
I will be explaining Flow Maps in the shader when I do the final video.
We're at 80% completion, and implementing the "smear" factor will have the shader up to 90%. Exciting news until Thursday!
I'll leave a closeup reference of the painterly style in the original ARCANE show and an image of how vectors are calculated, and how a texture map should look with the applied colors.
If you have any questions, please let me know in the comment section below.
Cheers!
-Pierre.
