I finally had the time to actually sit and complete this long-due shader setup referencing the shadow map style Genshin Impact uses, from their Unity Gaming Conference. This video has a quick rundown of the steps involved>>
Why is it important to stylize shadows? You can easily define your shadows in a texture map, instead of tweaking normals. You can further control the direction of the shadows using a light vector, a facial orientation vector and an evaluation method to know when the face reveals/hides the shadow against the light position vector.
