The colors, as they are right now, are so insane you'd need an eye strain warning. I threw a filter over top and it's cool to see the patterns stand out rather than the crazy colors. I'll be adding more lanterns and maybe another lion or two, but I've been working on this for like a week now and I just wanted to share where I'm at on it.
Lunar New Year is a big deal in Hawaii. We have a big Chinese population, and so much of Hawaii's current agriculture, structure and culture was built by Chinese immigrants. The past couple years there haven't been Lunar New Year celebrations in Chinatown, and we miss it a lot. I don't think there will be one this year, but I hope soon we can go and all celebrate as a community again. The dragons you see here are based on photos I've taken over the years!
The husbands are kissing behind a mandarin orange, a symbol of good fortune -- the Chinese word for mandarin (kam) sounds similar to the word for “gold”, so having mandarin oranges around at New Year is said to bring riches into your life!
