In 2019 I agreed to a commission for someone who was really adamant that it be on paper, an original. I should have said no, but I felt really beholden to this person who was excessively generous and it seemed like my art was really important to them. I really wanted to make them happy. So I sketched it in Procreate, printed it, bought a lightbox, bought fancy brush pens, and proceeded to have literal, not figurative, crying fits while I was inking. It was so chunky, so ugly, so utterly without finesse, without control. And there it was: control. I cried as I worked, tears pooling on my glasses, and when I was done I hated it so much that I took my expensive Pentel brush pen into the driveway and obliterated it with a paving stone.
Weird things happened and I said “I cannot do this.” I loved the sketch, but it sat untouched for more than a year. I would always think about how it all felt wrong when I tried to do it on paper. Finally I decided to make it mine again. I'm so glad I could do this in Procreate, because I did that armor with sheer guesswork, and I cannot imagine how the fuck I would have done it with watercolor.
That’s a lot of emotion for soft smut, but it’s mine. And now it’s yours too. 💛
