ABOUT THE CHANNEL
- As previously stated, our next video will be part of a collaboration. Originally it was planned to be released on Tuesday. However, due to our sponsor taking a short break, we have to delay our video for a few days. Expecting Friday or Saturday.
- Afterward, we'll have a fun video for Christmas, where we have one more anime focus video, in which Buddha and Jesus enjoy their vacation in Japan. Yep, it's gonna be weird.
- For January, we'll return to Chinese cinema, with one of the worse looking animated film ever made (It looks worse than the Amazing Bulk, I kid you not).
- And we'll also have a retrospective for Jackie Chan!
ABOUT MEDIA
- Let's have a short discussion about kid's movie. So in the comment section on our Over the Moon video, opinions regarding the film is very split. Some people love it and find it emotional, other's find it shallow and uninteresting.
- However, one criticism I never really understand is that it is "a kids' movie".
- Why is it geared towards kids a bad thing?
- First, when people say "kids' movie", they mean movie that aims exclusively towards kids. This is different from most Pixar movies, which I'll call "family films" here. That much I understand.
- These kids' movie are often so dumb and easy to understand, it lacks any form of challenge to adults. And I think that might be the reason why many people look down at them.
- Yet, I don't think that's an entirely fair criticism. I'm a grown man, but I set my mind in the right mood to enjoy a kids show. Majority of the internet enjoys Sonic the Hedgehog, and that movie was really kiddie.
- Many of us also enjoyed these kids movie when we were young, and we hold them to high regard today: Hocus Pocus, Jumanji, Casper, all of the Earnest movies. Heck, some may even say Home Alone is a kids' movie. Yet they are guilty pleasures at worst, classics at best.
- I personally enjoyed Santa with Muscles, but that's just me.
- What I mean is, if we enjoyed these kiddie films when we were young, why are we so against movies that aim at today's kids? I understand the dislike for the Emoji movie, or the Smurf movies, because they are terribly made.
- But, the Angry Bird movies are surprisingly good! The second one especially so, no joke. It even got good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. But in my opinion, it never got the respect It deserved, and that is all because it has the stigma of being a kids' film.
- And I don't think that's fair. Just because a film doesn't have us in mind as the target audience, just because we have trouble enjoying the film, doesn't mean the film is inherently flawed or bad. As long as it is made with love and affection, respect and entertain its audience, it is a good film in my eyes.

Those are totally fair criticism. I just don't think the short comings of this film is an inherent quality of it being a kids' film. There is no doubt the film can handle it's characterization much better. And even with better writing, I don't think it'll be enjoyed my a lot of adults, what with its cute animals and ping-pong sidekicks. These are the qualities I think are inherent to a kids' film. They are something adults find hard to enjoy, but they don't make the film bad.

2020-11-30 17:05:53 +0000 UTCI thought your take on Over the Moon was correct, but I also didn't enjoy it. It felt like the themes and characterizations were designed for a younger audience and they felt wooden and overly simplistic to me. I'd point to Inside Out as a movie that has, I think, similar thematic interests (with very different cultural contexts) but the dialog and character work feels more naturalistic. I don't think that impression is a critique exactly? At the end of the day we all have different views on what we 'accept' (I could not accept dialog that felt overly simplistic to me, but had no trouble with a magic rocket) and it's a question of taste rather than quality. However, I do think that we could categorize childrens movies as being told in more naturalistic ways v.s. explicitly stating the themes without deciding which we think is better.
