2024-09-07 01:57:22 +0000 UTCStill, because we focused our efforts on word of mouth and radio, our intel guys did tell our team that most locals viewed Americans as a positive. Sometimes, you gotta lie to get the job done.

2024-01-29 06:07:47 +0000 UTCHeh, ghost patrols remind of a thing I did as PSYOP in Afghanistan. Commanders always like us handing out leaflets, but I was in an incredibly rural part of Afghanistan where the vast majority of the population couldn't read. This meant it was best to disseminate information through word of mouth or our radio station. Buuuuttttt, that's not quantifiable, so when our command would get mad that we weren't handing out enough leaflets, my team would just lie and say we handed out hundreds.

2024-01-29 06:06:16 +0000 UTCBit late, but "Orgel" in german only refefers to the church pipe thingy. For a thingy to be considered an Orgel, it has to be an instrument using multiple pipes. So there are things like "Drehorgel" which I presume is something very specific to southern german/austrian/swiss, you'd just have to look up images.

2023-11-18 12:56:22 +0000 UTCPeople out here complaining about Nate's tangents... I actively look foward to Nate tangents, they're almost always entertaining. Just listen to Mike Duncan (in general) or Des Latham (for stalingrad) if you want just straight forward information... Im here to be entertained

2023-10-18 23:04:08 +0000 UTCRe brewing on Guadalcanal- my grandfather was a RNZAF ground crew man on the island. He told me many times of barrels of “jungle juice” fermented into foaming hell cocktails. You swept the raft of insects aside and dipped a cupful. Got you wasted.

2023-10-12 03:56:06 +0000 UTCNot trying to be a whiny asshole, but can y’all please rein in Nate’s rambling speeches? It’s really ruining these episodes.

2023-10-09 23:13:46 +0000 UTCI remember reading an academic paper on the pens where the Germans held Soviet POWs before and after the encirclement and it was some positively harrowing shit. Some of the worst conditions I've ever read about during WW2 and to those that survived in the cannibal hell-pit, their prize is to get re-captured by the Soviets.

2023-10-09 07:47:40 +0000 UTCGram-mL conversion applies to water, but ethanol is lighter than water. So, it would probably be about 120-130?mL/4 + 1/3 floz of vodka. In Australia that’s four standard drinks. Again, this is in the context of Russians so still not doing a lot of damage. Source: I’m an assistant gin distiller

2023-10-06 01:07:34 +0000 UTCI feel like Nate continuously jumping in with random anecdotes is kinda ruining the flow of these episodes

2023-10-03 17:04:00 +0000 UTCI guess I'd sound kind of naive if I mentioned that the accounts of the literal fighting and backstabbing between NKVD and Soviet Army surprised me since surely this isn't something modern armies do.

2023-10-02 06:23:14 +0000 UTCI was deployed to al dhafra as mx crew for heavy jets and they would limit your drinks to 3 a night, but dudes would just bank their shots every night into a thermos or whatever for their one day off

2023-10-01 20:27:54 +0000 UTCIt's the Russian version of the c-word (though in context, it more means "shit" or "fuck"

2023-10-01 15:07:13 +0000 UTCok i gotta ask, what is the russian word nate was joking about? from context it sounds like it basically means "ah well, guess i'll just die"

2023-09-25 20:57:07 +0000 UTCThe whole Caucasian=White thing I think was an 18th century thing that for whatever weird fucking reason has stuck around, there was this belief at the time that "different races" had evolved from different proto human ancestors in different places and that made it okay to be racist.

2023-09-25 17:14:19 +0000 UTCI read a book years ago about the impact of Soviet culture on Russian food and how they were even more of a industrialized food culture than the US, so I guess it makes sense that it's pretty much midwest food but slavic.

2023-09-25 15:43:56 +0000 UTCNate's story at the start reminds me of having to talk German to an Italian couple so they could talk French to a Senegalese man in a train carriage on the way from Paris to Milan.
