[Episode] When Hollywood Speaks Chinese, I Cringe | Video Essay

Ever since I brought up this topic on social media, the subject has been bubbling in the back of my mind. It's a topic few have discussed. Hopefully, I've made it interesting for you.

On this topic, I can only offer my limited perspective as a Chinese speaker. But I know Hollywood treats almost everything non-English equally terribly. So how has your language been treated?

I donโ€™t speak Chinese, but I do speak another Asian language. I can understand how painful it can be when something is translated badly in an Asian language.

I vaguely remember that movie having some weird English, too. Maybe one day I'll make a video from the other side of the perspective.

Accented Cinema

I just watched Detective Chinatown 2 and the accents are terrible, but there are a few scenes where they make fun of it, and I literally lolโ€™d.

Spanish, not so bad, as Hollywood has a good staple of spanish-speaking actors, though most are "latino" (except Bardem and Banderas) so is a bit weird to hear someone that is supposed to be from Spain speaking with Cuban accent. But TBH the worst offender in my case was Bollywood. There was a time they started making spain as a location to visit and boy, it WAS WEIRD. At least the bad guys dressed eurosuits and not "toreador" outfits.

My mandarin is rough but oooof. Listening to the clips in your last video hurts ๐Ÿ˜

As someone whose Chinese is still really shaky, it's a relief to know that my failure to understand all the Mandarin in this video may not be ENTIRELY my fault.
