Spring is starting for many of us. Hopefully the change of season treats you well. As for me, I have to endure two more months of snow. Oh, Montreal.
CHANNEL UPDATE
- Our next video is getting pretty big. I've been spending the past week watching Leslie Cheung movies and other Hong Kong LGBT films non-stop, and I'm still not done with the catalogue. It seems like I'll have to delay the video for a few days. But I think it'll be worth it.
- The remainder of our docket is the same: Turning Red, Malaysian Cinema, and Drive My Car (if it won an Oscar). We also added a video idea: Let's talk about every single "Gods Must be Crazy" movies after the first one, including the Jiangshi one.
- I'm also thinking of going back to the Tokusatsu genre again. It has been a while. Not sure what to talk about, yet. If you have something to recommend, let me know! We'll probably host a poll about it later.
MEDIA TALK
- Apparently Peacemaker is good? Can't say I expected that. I even made a prediction in a previous Patreon post, talking about how the trailer looks really bad and lacking in personality. But I guess it's just a bad trailer.
- At least I was right about Uncharted... Or did I? The critics agree with me, but the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is through the roof. However, there is no buzz around this film. I guess even those who like the film doesn't like it enough to talk about it. Kinda the exact same situation as Jungle Cruise.
- Well, it seems I'm not that great at predicting films. But I already knew that. Let me share with you some of my bad predictions:
- (Nope, this part is wrong. Tenet is a solo Chris endeavour) Tenet is a weird one. I can't say I actually have any expectations to it, because it's coy marketing builds no anticipation beyond the word "Nolan". Yet it still manages to completely destroy me by being a mess of story telling. I used to call Johnathan Nolan the "superior Nolan", as he's the one that usually comes up with the unorthodox ideas. I was wrong. He has ideas, but at least Chris Nolan knows how to tell a story. After Tenet and Westworld, I've lost all confidence in J. Nolan.
- I fully expected Captain Marvel to be the good film, and Shazam to be the bad one. These two films came out around the same time, and both had the name Captain Marvel at one point. Hot off the success of Infinity War, one of my favourites of the MCU, I have high hopes for Captain Marvel. The DCEU, however, was still a mess at the time, and Shazam's trailer looks pretty generic. What we got, however, is a complete reversal. Both films ended up hinting at what their respective franchise will become: MCU becomes formulaic, and DCEU becomes experimental.
- I actually had hope for The King's Man, at least before the pandemic ended the world. Its first trailer builds a fascinating world, where the beloved spy agency forms during WWI. To be fair, we did get that. It's story weaving around the events of the First World War is amazing. But that's also ALL we got. The action is subpar for the series, the characters are bland, and it lacks the energy the series is known for. Still better than the second one, but nowhere near as good as the trailer makes it out to be.
- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is unexpectedly good. The first one is a pretty decent film, but it's one of those movies that I don't think a lot of people expect a good sequel to follow. Director Matt Reeves was fresh off the success of Let Me In, and really brings a certain charm to this movie. The decision to go with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio when every other movies uses 2.35 is already a bold one. And I have to say, it makes the film feel so much more grounded because of it.
- Jumanji 2 is good in the same vein. While the first one is already an unexpected success, I was expecting the second one to just be a cash grab. Instead, I get to see the Rock acting his hearts out, giving a monologue in the voice of Danny DeVito. It has since become one of my favourite Christmas movie. Good stuff.
I guess that's all I can think of at the moment. As you can see, it's already a pretty long list. Believe it or not, going to film school actually doesn't make you better at predicting film qualities. We are all bad at predicting things. That's why Hollywood makes stink bombs all the time!
What are some of your failed predictions about movies? In any case, I'll see you in a few days (hopefully) with a new video!
