[Weekly Update] April 3, 2022

Hope you had fun this April Fool's!

Spring is here for most of us, and the Southern Hemisphere is still nice and warm. It's the few weeks in a year where it's pretty cozy all around the world. Enjoy the weather!

CHANNEL UPDATE

• Did you catch our April Fool's video? It took quite a bit of effort to create an original video like that, but it was a fun experience. We'll share some tidbits later down this update.
• We are also making a small behind the scenes video, releasing in a few days. The script (along with scripts for the previous two videos) will be uploaded tomorrow.
• The rest of the update schedule has not changed much: a video on Drive My Car is next, followed by a video on Malaysian Cinema.
• We also added a few more video ideas to the backlog, including a fun one: Taking a look at the recent Jackie Chan movies. And by recent, I mean bad. Like... REALLY BAD ones.
• There is also plans to talk about Cynthia Rothrock, all of the God's Must Be Crazy movies (including the Jiangshi one), and all of the Ip Man movies outside of the Donnie Yen universe.
• However, all of these are retrospective type videos that take a lot more works. We'll have to sandwich some individual movie highlights in between. If you have any single movie you'd like us to take a look and talk about, share it with us!

BEHIND THE SCENE

No media talk this week. Instead, let's talk about our last video. Been a while since we last did one of these.

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to film something for this April. I was craving going back on film sets and doing creative works as a team. I toyed with a few ideas with my collaborators, some of which are funnier than other.

Outside of the fake documentary that we settled on, another idea is to have a short film parody of Stephen King's Misery, in which an obsessive fan would kidnap me and force me to do a video on the philosophy of hentai.

I don't watch enough hentai to do a video on that, so... that was a nope. Also YouTube probably doesn't like that.

I've also toyed with the idea of just uploading a rifftrax style movie commentary. Although I figure most people came to this channel to learn and not for the comedy of it.

Oh and I thought about doing a Vtuber debut, too.

At the end, doing a proper film shoot, even just for an April Fool's video, was enough to revitalize my passion (and anxiety) for filmmaking. Seeing comments loving this video gives a completely different feel.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate every comment on our video essays, too. But having people watch and enjoy something truly original is the only way to satisfy that creative thirst.

This week I'll meet up with a few colleagues and restart our martial arts short film project, which was put on halt due to covid curfew. I can't wait to actually show you what I can do, outside of film analysis and video essays. I want to be known as a filmmaker. Hopefully when I'm there, you'll be there with us, too.
