[Weekly Update] Nov 6, 2022

Daylight saving is stupid.

I wish I have a degree in political science, so I can run for office to abolish it. That's how dumb it is. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

CHANNEL UPDATE

Currently working on our Jet Li episode. As expected, there is a lot of ground to cover, so I have to skim over a lot of details. maybe in the future I'll go into more specifics, like talking about Jet Li's fascinatingly cheesy English-language films.

We are also working on a video about Chinese web movies. It's a bit outside of my wheelhouse, since I don't know all that much about the streaming industry. But how can I resist showing you sentient hive-mind cockroaches.

It's also been a while since I cover anything from Mainland China. And I wanna talk about something good for once.

Coming soon is our 100th episode, and I'm planning on doing a sort of behind the scene video, explaining how I make video essays. It may or may not pan out, as I don't find the process all that entertaining. I'll keep you posted.

MEDIA TALK

Okay, so what are some of the weirdest reasons you went to watch a movie?

Usually we watch a movie because it has a particular actor or director we like, or recommendations from a friend, or just running out of options. Or in my case, doing it for work.

But then I went to watch Coco with a friend, because we were bored, and her name happens to be Coco. That's it, that was the entire reason we bought a ticket. We weren't high either.

It's a film I wouldn't otherwise go to watch, as there was little publicity around the movie. I'm glad I saw it, though. It became my favourite Pixar movie since Toy Story 3.

I think I mentioned Ravenous before, a Quebec Zombie horror movie, in which my acting directing professor plays an old woman with a shotgun. Some may say I watched it because of a particular actor. I say I watch it because it's a particular actor with a SHOTGUN.

The reason I watched The Sorcerer's Apprentice is even weirder. I heard people say it has some awful Chinese dialogues and I just have to watch it. This was before I started making that video about Chinese dialogues, too.

It was a disappointment, though. And not because the movie blows. The dialogue ends up being just a couple of lines, and it was delivered by Nick Cage, so you know what to expect (or do you?). Still, Cage is entertaining, and Monica Bellucci is always a win.

I suppose that counts as a form of hate-watching, which in of itself is a pretty weird practice. I'd like to imagine it being a pretty widely practice thing. But now that I think about it, I'm the only one in my film circle to do that.

Anyway, that's about the weirdest reason I can think of. What are some of the reasons you watched a movie? Did the film turn out good? Share your story, and maybe we can be weird together.

I'll see you soon-ish with a new video on Jet Li.
