Yeah I totally forgot it was a thing last night. That's how much I pay attention to Award shows these days.
Our next video is gonna be one I didn't announce ahead of time. We'll talk about the desexualization of Asian men in Hollywood, just in time to show Key Hue Quan's sexy look.
Afterward, I'll be taking a week off to finish some non-video related work. It has been a few years, and our Patreon video doesn't even sound like me anymore. I think it is time for me to change it.
And maybe I'll remove the ridiculous 14999 tier, too. The joke had run its course, I think.
So that was the Oscars. I never really have a lot of faith in it, but it seemed the award all went to whom I expected.
Except Jamie Lee Curtis, but that's only because I was expecting Stephanie Hsu, who had way more screen time to flex. Still, well deserved wins for everyone.
Well, let's take a quick look at the winners, shall we?
A lot of people don't understand why EEAaO won best picture. Certainly, this is not a film that will appeal to everyone. it is after all, a dildo-fu movie. But I think it wins for two reasons:
First, it really is the only movie from last year that will undoubtedly leave a great impact on the industry. It's strange and off-beat maximalist story will likely inspires and creates many copy cats. It may lead to a new era of film styles and genre.
Second, I mean... Just look at the competition. The Banshees of Inisherin and Tár is good. Everything else... Eh?
The same logic also applies to best director.
Best actors, supporting or lead, I think all went to the ones people wanted. Honestly, though, all four categories are very competitive. I would nod along if any of the nominated stars won their category.
Best Original Song: Naatu Naatu. I mean, duh.
Animated Feature: Del Toro's Pinocchio. I supposed well deserved. Puss in Boots deserves a lot of attention, but it's unfortunate that it came out facing one of the most ambitious animated projects in recent year. Pinnochio is a 2 hours long stop-motion epic. You don't see those very often.
Cinematography: Of all the nominated films, yeah, All Quiet is kinda an obvious choice. This category always has a bias towards war movies, large scale organized chaos.
I'm with Roger Deakin on this, though. It seems the actual ones that I care aren't nominated: The Batman. The only thing I don't like about its cinematography is that sometimes the feel doesn't feel very tactile. But the tech, the style, the composition, the shot ideas are all unique and cohesive. It may not win the category, but no nomination is a damn shame.
Sound Design: Top Gun. Watching that movie in the theater is the only way to understand why it wins. The movie is carried hard by its sound design.
Editing: EEAaO. With a movie this complicated, It doesn't even have to be well edited. The fact that someone put all of the pieces together should be enough to win. Someone sacrificed their hairline to edit this film.
Out of an astonishing 11 nominations, EEAaO won an equally astonishing 7. People probably look to this film and wonder what is the big deal. Well, hopefully in a few more years, we'll realize how much of a watershed moment it was. Or maybe it won't. Time will tell.
Anyway, that is the update for this week. Time for me to get back to work, and I'll see you soon with a new video!
