[Weekly Update] Movies I can't talk about because of YouTube

I took a break this weekend and played through Outer Wilds. To stay true to the fandom's custom, I won't spoil anything. But if you are a science nerd and an artist like me, you'll likely find this game an unforgettable experience.

WEEKLY UPDATE

Hope you enjoyed my latest hot take regarding Godzilla. I hesitated wether or not I should do this video, because of how toxic the recent Godzilla fandom discourse has become. More than a few people assumed I'm one of the posers who has only seen Shin and Minus One, and I honestly can't blame them.

Nevertheless, I'm beyond happy to see the discourse surrounding the video and its topic being extremely civil. Sure, it's comforting to see everyone just agrees with you on everything.  But I think it's more constructive and more rewarding to know that people who disagrees with my position are willing to engage with my points and discuss. it's the best thing an essayist can hope for.

Our next video will be a multi-part series about the aesthetic of China throughout history. Originally planned as a 2 parter, there is a good chance it'll be a 3 parter instead. The videos won't be made consecutively, as I have plans for other topics. It is a much bigger undertaking than I initially thought. Hopefully it'll be of interest to you!

Finally, because of how cramped our schedule is, our April Fool's video might not actually be released on April Fool's. We'll see. The video should be able to stand on its own. But it's way funnier to be released on that specific day.

Still not sure what to do with bonus video. Maybe The Great Dictator? Or Chaplin, starring Robert Downey Jr?

MEDIA TALK

We've talked about this topic before, but this time it's a bit different. Instead of me having nothing to say about the films, I have plenty, but YouTube wouldn't let me say it. Not without demonetization, anyway.

You see, in our video about Devilman, there are many comments suggesting worse movies from Japan. It is as if I just don't know enough about Japanese cinema to cast such a judgement on Devilman. But the reality is a tad more strange.

Yes, I have seen Lust of the Dead! I've even seen Undead Pool, a pink film that's like 20 percent sex scenes. But like I said in the video, it's uninteresting to call them bad, because they set out to do exactly what they achieved: Being crass, sleazy, and dumb.

By also, "Lust of the Dead" is a subtitle. I can't even type out its actual title without making the situation extremely awkward if not straight up uncomfortable. YouTube as a platform requires me to make child-safe content that aren't aimed at children. There is no way I can navigate my way through this Kafka-esque labyrinth with talking about.... Oppai Chanbara. Yes, I've seen that movie, too.

Another film that I wanted to talk about but couldn't: Riki-Oh. This monumentally violent martial arts movie saw classic scenes such as punching right into someone's gut, popping someone's eyeball out by striking the back of their head, and strangling someone with intestines. All of the good stuff are stuff I can't show on YouTube. There is no way I can make this video.

A lot of Hong Kong CAT III movies fall into this category. Unless our channel explodes and I can forgo sponsorships and ad revenues (Thank you for supporting us on Patreon!), there is no way for me to make an Anthony Wong retrospective, as most of his films are classics such as "Ebola Syndrome" and "The Untold Story".

There is this movie called Blind Mountain, and it is one of the most depressing and devastating film from China. It's about a young woman being kidnapped and sold to a remote village, where law doesn't apply. It's similar to Silenced, the South Korean film we talked about before. It similarly explores an extremely sensitive but important topic, and changed local laws for the better. Since our video on Silenced was demonetized, there is a good chance Blind Mountain would, too. I do want to talk about it one day, just because of how important the film is. But with the channel being in a rut right now, taking a hit from demonetization is too much. So it'll have to wait until the algorithm picks up our channel again.

Finally, politics. YouTube community guidelines are often not happy with me mentioning any political topics that are remotely controversial. That includes showing footage of Jan 6. That's why in the meme video, we didn't show any political figureheads, despite them being a frequently mocked topic.

So, those are the reasons why I can't talk about some of the movies, despite having plenty to say about it. I wouldn't be able to talk about ANY movie without your direct support right here, so thank you so much for being part of our Patreon community! It's time I get back to work, and I'll see you soon ish with a new video!
