[Weekly Update] Movies on iPad

It's been a rather bumpy first half of the year, as I find myself in a clinic waiting to see a doctor, again. Hopefully the rest of this summer will go better in terms of health and productivity.

CHANNEL UPDATE

Our next video is finished and should go live tomorrow. It's a simple and short video, but also a spicy one: I'll be defending one of Internet's favourite running gag: Steven Seagal's weight. Once the video clears with copyright and sponsorship, it'll go live.

To catch up with our schedule, our next video will also be a simple one. We'll talk about movies that are set in and around the same historical period. As always, we'll give special focus to international features. So, expect comparison like Troy and Red Cliff, Yojimbo and A Fistful of Dollars, Once Upon a Time in China and RRR.

Finally, we'll watch a movie together this upcoming weekend. We'll be live chatting our reactions on Discord. Come hang out if you have time! We are still trying to decide our hours. Come and cast your vote!

Finally, for bonus video, let's maybe talk about what makes the OG Predator movie such a genre bending classic, and what other setting might work.

MEDIA TALK

Do you watch movies while waiting in a hospital? Or waiting for your train, commuting to work on a bus, waiting for your seat in a restaurant?

I asked because the person next to me is watching a movie on her iPad while waiting for her doctor. Admittedly, it's Deadpool. But still, I don't think I can do that. And I don't know why.

Maybe it's just my inner snobbery, and that I subconsciously see movies as a single continuous experience that should not be interrupted. But when I watch movies at home, I interrupt my own viewing sessions all the time.

Or maybe it's a matter of concentration. In this environment, with a small screen and a pair of headphones, I know I won't get the most out of my experience. And once I watch a movie, optimally or not, I won't want to rewatch it any time soon. It feels like a waste of film. But then, I'm perfectly happy with watching movies on planes.

What I mean is, in my head, there seems to be a set of locations where it is acceptable to watch movies. And the criteria for these locations are entirely arbitrary. One thing is clear, though, is that film viewing isn't something I do as a casual pass time. That seemed quite different to how most people consume movies. And I'm curious as to if I'm alone in my oddness.

I'd say this is something film school drilled into me, as every movie I watch feels like homework. But I'm not entirely sure I was ever the type to watch a movie on an iPad at a Starbucks. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if my snobbery is built into my soul. Seems pretty on brand, honestly.

So my question for you this week is, do you watch movies on iPads or other tablets? Do you watch movies on computer monitors? Are you picky in terms of locations and surroundings?

So I just spend four and a half hour just for the doctor to tell me they can't find anything wrong, despite my right ear having like... half the usual hearing and is mildly in pain. Guess I'm seeing another doctor for a second opinion. You'll have to excuse the shorter update this week. As you can see, I'm literally not feeling well.

Anyway, I'll see you with a new video soon.

Comments

I don't tend to watch movies on small screens because I want to treat it as a continuous experience too, and also as much of an *experience* as possible. I go to the cinema as much as possible, but will be happy with a computer screen esp if it's like time-limited access or something. I once tried to watch MARGOT AT THE WEDDING on a plane and couldn't hear half the dialogue or appreciate much of the interior cinematography. I glanced through the seats and the person in front was watching JUMPER. I was more engaged with that despite no audio and squinting at it through the seats :) So my only plane movies now are ones that are spectacles that don't need to rely on dialogue much.

I have met people like that, too. In fact, I suspect that's how most people watch movies. Unless it's something they highly anticipated, the films may not worth their attention.

I know several people for whom "looking at the screen occasionally" counts as "watching a movie." They don't care if they don't get the whole experience, they just want to see the fun bits or whatever. No, I don't understand it either, but they exist.
