Junji Ito Film Adaptations
This topic will explore some of the super low budget adaptation of Junji Ito's famous works, including a 2000 film called The Hanging Balloons, which I suspect is produced with the budget of two Onigiri. You can actually watch the whole movie here. These garage movie was all the rage in the early 2000s in Japan, and it's the side of J-horror that went unnoticed by most of the world. Anyway, here, have another film.
The Tomie Franchise
The Tomie films have since become an entity of its own, largely divorced from Junji Ito. In nearly a dozen adaptations, Tomie was bullied, killed, cursed, and even explored forbidden romance in a lesbian relationship. She has become a symbol for high school girls who fell outcasted. And it's a topic well worth exploring.
Japanese Urban Legend Films
The mid 2000s saw a wave of Japanese urban legend films made on the cheap. Based on stories like Slit-mouthed Woman, Teketeke, Hanako of the Toilet, and Babies in the Lockers, these films reflect the millennium anxiety felt by Japan, when everyone feared the traditional social order was crumbling.
Asian Horror Films You've Not heard of
This is a channel tradition at this point. With no real consistent topic, we'll cover three horror films from three different countries. I have set my eye on Macabre from Indonesia as one of the films. But if you have a movie you'd like to recommend, comment down below!
