[Weekly Update] Sick Day Movies

I'm sick again. This time it's either a flu or COVID. Either way my body aches.

I wanna work! But Every time I try to focus on writing my head just hurts and I start coughing.

CHANNEL UPDATE

Next Videos:
Script for our next video is nearly done. It was supposed to go live this week. But since I lost my voice, I won't be able to record it until next week. Hopefully While my voice is recovering, I can work on our second video in the background.

July Videos:
I also began planning for July, which will be somewhat women focused. We'll have a video on instances of women playing men in Hong Kong movies. Yes, it happens often enough to be a video topic.
And for our second July video, we'll talk about the “kick-chick" trope, a trope mostly found in gaming, where female characters often attacks by kicking more than punching. It's not the most pervasive of tropes, but the origin of this bias is so interesting, it should be known.

August and Beyond:
Heading into October, I'll be travelling to visit my family in China again. So, I'll be doing a few smaller scale video ahead. This usually means silly ideas, and one such idea is to talk about the Sailor Moon movie (first one), and its impact on me and the nerd circle.
I'd love like to do another Bad Movie World Tour video. Unfortunately, after Singapore and England, Poland joins the fun and offers 365 Days, another movie so bad it's unreviewable. Maybe I should use it to talk about manosphere culture instead... Or maybe not. I feel sick just thinking about it.

MEDIA TALK

I'm sick, so it's time for some sick day movies. Usually, this category includes feel good comedies: Home Alone, Princess Bride, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, etc. But that's just too easy and basic.

There is something fun about watching action adventure films when sick. I don't know what it is, but feeling delirious enhances a lot of the fun factor. I supposed the lack of emotional investment makes them an easy watch, too.

So, what movies am I talking about? I think the prime example would be Tremors, the surprisingly fun Kevin Bacon monster flick, in which a small town of a dozen people trying to survive a monster that attacks from underground. It's a 90s movie that pays sincere homage to 60s monster movies, all while being lighthearted and smart about it.

Perfection, Nevada, the small settlement in the desert, eases my mind and makes me calm. It's the perfect mood to be in when you are looking to escape from reality.

Similarly, though to a slightly less degree, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a blast to watch when sick. Like most modern movies, it's a bit too loud, too many dialogues, and not enough quiet moments to relax the mind. But still, the positive tone of the movie is so good, it brightens the spirit when I'm sick.

The new Star Trek movies are also similarly good sick day movies, too. I guess Chris Pine is just who I want to see when I'm sick.

Some of you may say all Star Trek movies are good sick day movies, and I don't disagree. But if I'm watching a classic ST film when I'm sick... I'm watching The Voyage Home for the 15th time. If you don't get it, then you just don't get it, man.

Finally, Conan the Barbarian remains the gold standard of sick day movie for me. It has everything: The lack of dialogue for a calming experience. The distant world for escapism. The epic and predictable story for an easy watch. And best of all, I can easily overlook its flawed action when I'm sick.

Anyway, that's the update this week. It's a bit simplistic, but my mind is foggy right now so please cut me some slag. Hopefully I can get back to work soon. In the mean time, take care!

Tremors is a true "friendship test" movie: If you can't enjoy it, we probably aren't a good match. It's just superb on nearly every level, from creature effects to casting to the snappy writing. And I'm not a creature-feature guy at all, but I love the first Tremors movie. (The quality... falls off somewhat. I remember watching a couple of the later installments with chagrin.)
