Major Breakthrough in the Biosynthesis of Psilocybin, Psilocin and Related Tryptamine-based Compounds

It seems the psychedelic related breakthroughs just keep coming.  CB Therapeutics is the latest to file a new patent that could lead to very efficient production of psilocybin and similar analogs which will help lower costs if psilocybin is ever approved by the FDA as medicine.   That said, the real barrier as far as costs go will likely be the fact that all initial protocols for psilocybin treatment will require many hours of intensive supervision, preparation, and followup/integration time from a licensed/trained professional (psychiatrists or otherwise) - something that could prove cost prohibitive.  It will be interesting to see what solutions develop to address that challenge.  I wonder if there will ever be remote trip sitters or app assisted therapy and integration?  My guess is that the underground self service model will grow after the FDA approves psilocybin for prescriptive use.

I'm not a lawyer either, and only time will tell if this patent is granted, but just because their process was inspired by some academic paper doesn't mean it isn't patentable. They may have come up with a much more elaborate process specifically intended for mass production which hasn't been granted any prior patents. But you have a good point, I'd be surprised if there were not already some patents existing for at least some aspects of the enzymatic production of tryptamines.

By "underground self service model" I basically mean just people treating themselves without a prescription or the help of a therapist or professional trip sitter. For example by following a modified Griffiths protocol on one's own: https://www.patreon.com/posts/28680845 There is also an existing underground psychedelic therapy network where you can see someone who does this type of work professionally, these practitioners have been interviewed by James Jesso and mentioned by Michael Pollan in his book "How to Change Your Mind": https://amzn.to/2NCiR3N

Can anyone link some references to the underground self service mentioned?

IANAL but how can they patent something that was discovered a few years ago in academia? https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/anie.201705489
