RPPR Illustrated: Cointract Island - The Tower and Primary Lab

Art by Patsy McDowell

The Cointract Tower

The Cointract Tower is the tallest building on the island and the seat of power for the Cointract DAO. The lower floors are dominated by the Coin Club. The middle floors are used for important business and security operations, while the top floors are used by the board of directors.

A hotel (Cointract Suites) operates next to the tower for visiting guests and important employees. Smaller support buildings are clustered near the tower as infrastructure.

The Coin Club - Cointract Island’s only Night Club

The Coin Club is the island’s premier night spot, although other bars exist. It features a large dance floor, stage for performers, state of the art lighting and sound system, and a private wine cellar for VIPs and smaller events. Various chimera were used to serve guests - couriers and fear-ret swarms carrying drinks, and ad zombies selling vape products, among others.

The club is cordoned off from the rest of the building. The only stairwell in the building is locked and monitored 24/7 by top tier security professionals.

Operations

The middle floors of the tower are used by important and loyal DAO employees to run the company’s most important operations. It has a small but skilled SWAT team on duty at any given time. Security is paramount and employs cutting-edge systems to keep the building safe.

The Penthouse

The top floors are dominated by living quarters and offices used by the board of directors. It also serves as a safe house for the board in case of an emergency. The Penthouse can lock itself off from the rest of the building. On the roof is an emergency helipad for quick extractions, if necessary.

The Secret Basement Vault

This level is only accessible from a special elevator in the Penthouse or a secret maintenance tunnel. Only the board and a few company insiders even know this basement exists. It contains generators to power the building for weeks in an emergency and supplies. The real prize is the backup data vault. All of Cointract’s research is secretly copied to the vault. The vault contains all of the secrets to make chimera, cybernetic control implants, and other bleeding edge research projects, worth untold billions.

As a last resort, if the vault is ever compromised, an experimental defense AI system activates and tries to use the many defense systems in the vault to murder all intruders.

The Primary Lab

Cointract’s major publicly acknowledged lab, used to create and improve chimera and cybernetic technology. Smaller lab facilities exist in the office park, but only this facility contains the infrastructure to create new chimera. Some of its major projects include:

The Chimera Creation Program: All chimera are grown in vats. The lab has been able to scale up production so that it could create hundreds of chimera a month. Holding pens and training facilities for the creatures are here as well.

Cybernetic Surgery Wing: Turning a chimera into a proper cointracter required implant surgery, which was conducted here.

The Necrobiotic ‘Goblin’ Program: Several dozen test subjects are kept here. Scientists test their capabilities, determining how to best market them. Some test subjects are being tested for military purposes, others for dangerous industrial work. A secondary lab grows giant spiders to harvest their legs.

The Cyborg Special Forces Program: The program aimed to turn disabled veterans into efficient killing machines. Unfortunately, the first crop of volunteers were not properly vetted. Many lied about their military experience and medical information so they could get cutting-edge cybernetic implants. Further compounding the problem, the cybernetic team rushed in creating the prosthetics and implanting them. The resulting botched cyborgs were unstable and a danger to everyone around them. They’ve been put in medically-induced comas until the team can figure out how to fix them.

The Grafting Program: This division created the biological equivalent of cybernetics, organic implants. Still in its early stages, each graft was unique and had to be tailor-made for the individual. Most of the implants were relatively small but were aimed at enhancing the performance of the subject in some way. Webbed fingers and toes, heat-sensing organs, and venom glads, were some of the program’s early successes, but who knows what else was inside?
