I really like how the late emperor isn't the way he is for the sake of just being a nasty person. He absolutely was a monster. But his deviance was caused by serious issues of his own. It's all just so interesting

2025-03-09 15:36:16 +0000 UTCI kinda enjoyed this episode as it was filling in some background details, though not enough details to really understand anything important from it. There are hints and allusions but nothing solid. Again, it was more of an episode setting up pieces for a future reveal, when everything will fall into place and we will be shocked, but there wasn't enough going on in the episode story to make it a great episode for me. The mystery was solved simply with a poison that preserves the body after death. I'd already guessed arsenic before the episode began so orpiment wasn't much of a surprise. It seems Maomao had already guessed the cause, too, and was simply looking for the proof. The orpiment she found in Jinshi's box of forbidden toys gave it away and she went in looking for evidence, found it... job done. It was far too simple but they had to keep it short to save time for filling in the background details of the previous Emperor, so that's fair enough. The Empress wasn't Jinshi's mother, she was the Emperor's mother, Jinshi's grandmother, presumably. Empress wasn't an official title but sort of an Emperor-mocking nickname for her. He was weak so his mother collected as much power to herself as she could in order to protect him. Calling her "Emperess" was saying she had the real power and the Emperor was her puppet. She held the reins of power, he wore the harness.

2025-03-09 15:19:11 +0000 UTCThe orpiment stone is the one Jinshi found in his dream/recollection we saw previously, when he encountered the Emperor in a corridor and the Emperor was dragged away by an elderly lady, dropping the stone as he left. Jinshi picked it up.

2025-03-08 08:57:11 +0000 UTCisnt the baby from Anshi and the former emperor the baby that got switched with ah-dou's baby (Jinshi) and died? so Jinshi is the current emperors son and the mother is Ah-dou, but he was raised by Anshi, we just dont know if Anshi knows the babys got switched or am i missing something?

2025-03-08 02:11:02 +0000 UTCThe impression I got is that Jinshi is her son. Given the timeline we are shown here it seems like she conceived him that night with the Emperor when she “tortured” him. That would be why he’s a child of a mistake. What she did to the emperor.
