but then again are you really surprised? I get everyone's names wrong LOL but yeah some characters say it more softly I think leading me to hear momo, but with some characters I will hear maomao more, and obviously it makes sense given her design and cat-like expressions - but yeah just a trick of my brain sometimes!!

You actually hear, "Mo-mo"? That's interesting. It's similar to the thing that makes you see faces in clouds. Your brain translates the sound to be more familiar. You know that there is no r or l sounds in Japanese, right? They have a sound which is between r and l, but most Westerners will hear that sound as either an r or an l because the brain translates it to sound more familiar to us. That's why people get on your case: their brain is probaby translating the sound as well, but translating it slightly differently. Everyone is sure they are hearing the "correct" pronunciation and don't understand how anyone could be hearing anything differently. It can really bug me when it's happening with character names but I have to remind myself that they're hearing it differently from the way I hear it and I'm not qualified to judge which of us is closest... I have made an annoyed comment from time to time, though: Just listen to how they say it in the show and repeat that!!! I forget they're already pretty sure they are doing lol Mao is an onomatopoeic word for the noise a cat makes. In England they say meow and in Japan they say nyan, so we don't even hear animal sounds the same way! I figure, as long as people know what you mean your pronunciation and grammar are doing the job they are meant to do. Your pronunciation is different from mine but it's just fine. Don't let them bother you when they complain, and don't worry too much about "getting it right" because, honestly, it bothers me so much more when a native English speaker suddenly tries to pronounce a Japanese word "correctly" in the middle of an English sentence. It throws off the whole cadence and is really jarring, ironically making the word they are trying so hard to pronounce correctly sound more out of place and like a terrible pronunciation than if they'd said it in their own accent instead.
