[full res and commentary] Hana (Jan 24, 2022)

Twitter caption: "It seriously took you more than 4 tries to solve the Wordle?"

Timelapse here, and PSD here!

Continuing on my quest to git gud at digital painting, I drew a simple portrait of Hana looking at the viewer with an expression of shock and disgust.

On top of the gratuitous rim lighting, I added a little bit of noise and chromatic aberration and bloom as a little bit of garnish, which actually looked kind of cool. Artstation here I come! Although, it did end up being kind of a pain because it turns out it's hard to do additional painting on top of stuff you added a bunch of effects to. If only Procreate had adjustment/effect layers.

I didn't originally have a caption for this, but I was drawing this while in a call with a bunch of friends who were doing the day's Wordle, and we got into a bit of trash talking about how solving a Wordle in 4 tries isn't really that good. It seemed like a good thing for Hana to get disgusted about. It also turned out to be appropriate for today's word, because apparently it was very difficult.

Anyway, I feel like I'm beginning to maybe get a handle on the painting thing a little bit, so I hope the next ones will be gooder and gooder. Will I ever go back to big pixelart illustrations? Who knows? I think it'll probably be a "comics only" thing going forward, because I'm finding that working in high res lets me do so much more stuff like rotating/scaling/warping things, making minor adjustments, adding cool effects, using cool brushes, etc that are a huge pain in the butt or impossible when working in low res. It unlocks a whole new tech tree that I want to really start exploring instead of holding myself back to a specific style or niche.

Blah blah blah, I'll save the rest for the Friday Ramble. As always, thanks for your support!!

yeah! the benefit of my pixelarty workflow is that it looks pretty good for the speed at which i can churn em out, so basically perfect for my comics which are more focused on the situation than the art itself.

Nice!! I like that idea of still doing your comics in the traditional low-res style and broadening your horizons and getting good at painting with your main stuff.

i think it's good you can manage explore new things without restricting yourself to that specific style and niche!
