I just make big pars then move it into zbrush and after merge it bringin it back to blender. Then i just use cut plane and cut curves.
There are a lot of little things while preparing for printing. I recommend blender 2 8 branch. It works fine with big polycount up to 7 millions. If you want i can write a tutorial about preparing to print

I have to ask, do you have any tips on breaking up larger models into parts like this? I'm even curious what software you recommend for it.
