This could easily be happening in the world of "Quest for the Cursed Temple" - especially if the Black Mother wins! Hell, it could even be Lamora, and this is the story of how she got her foothold in the court.

This would be the opposite- a young prince grows up seeing and understanding the suffering of the world, and desperate to do something about it with his power. When the old regent dies, the prince becomes king and his power increases. With the increase of his power, his ability to help increases, and he works so hard to use it for the good. But he's young, he's unsure what is best, and he is so, so worn out- if only there was a wise, maternal figure who could tell him what to do, who could share the burden, could make him just that bit less tired, Did I mention the ancient, once great but now reviled religion led by an opportunistic holstaur who is all too keen to leverage the power vacuum of the new court to return to prominence?
