Well, they ARE a member of the nightshade family... Funny enough, IIRC, when thecplants were imported to Italy from the Americas, they thought the fruit was poisonous. Tomatoes became a lowe-class food once people were brave enough to try it. Personally, I can't stand raw tomatoes; their flavor or consistency, so I only eat them processed into other things.
