Patreon's new bullshit

Ha ha ha ha, they said it was my job to sell this to you.  Ha ha ha.

Anyway, you should have received an email from Patreon yesterday about their new pledge fee situation.  TL;DR: You will be paying more so they will make more, and they are selling this as me making more.  (I am already making less.)  I hate this.  Everyone hates this.

Ryan North wrote about it better than me:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/15758286

(i'm too pissed to be very coherent)

Suffice to say, if Patreon decides to be stupid and actually do this despite all the backlash, I will be lowering the $5 See Tomorrow's Strip pledge tier to $4.50 so that you won't end up paying any more than you did before.  I can't lower the $1 minimum, so for that, I dunno!!!!  Hopefully $1.35 is still worth two bonus strips a month.  But take care of yourselves first, and if you need to cancel, we are still buds, don't worry.

I depend on Patreon to make my rent and feed my children, so I can't just dump this cold turkey out of spite and anger, and will hopefully soldier on until, say, Drip, Kickstarter's Patreon Clone, is out of its invite-only stage.  We'll see!  If you can stay, great!  That's very appreciated.  But take care of yourselves first.  This is 2017.  Everything's on fire.

Oh, and since someone asked, my Paypal is wiigii@gmail.com, but honestly I'd rather folks still get bonus strips, so i dunno

OH OH and also important, this is where you can write Patreon to let them know this is butts: https://patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Um this is 2017.... credit card processing fees are almost never anywhere near as high unless you really actively fail to shop around with your payment gateway...

I hope by buying your Books via comixology I Can Support you even better than via Patreon, where I just signed Off.

Thank you for the contact link, I hadn't figured out a good way to contact them. Now that you gave that to me, I sent them a stern email asking them how exactly they plan to address the severe impediment to the small donors, like myself.

If you have 12 ongoing pledges, the fees will add up to $4.20 plus 2.9% each month even though they only pay a few cents once to charge you the total amount. This isn't any fee they need to suddenly pass on to us, it's the "Patreon fee" aka their updated cut from the money cake, giving them a large increase in profits from small pledges. The fact that they tried to sell it as a favor to creators is just pathetic imho.

So they crunched the numbers, figured out that a lot of pledges are small (no more than $3), and decided they need to make more money from that. That they didn't want to piss off creators by directly cutting into their revenue is understandable, but did they actually expect $1 pledges simply becoming $1.37 pledges to fly with anyone? Many creators on here value their relationship with their fans higher than the one they have with Patreon, thus the outrage on both sides. It's made worse by the fact that they tried to sell it as a favor to creators ("now you get 95% guaranteed!") and tried to pitch their new cut as fee, as if every single pledge actually incurred individual fees for them. Oh, the 95% thing actually only holds up if you happen to forget about the new fees, or in what world does 100/137 come down to 0.95? Anyway, I sent them a nice support request yesterday with no response so far. If this actually goes through, I'm going to cancel my small-time pledges. It's December, I'm already rewarding my family for bullshitting me for a few days, I don't need that on here as well.

I'm going to give Patreon two months to figure something better out, and if they don't I'm probably going to cancel all my $1 pledges. I have a bunch of $1 or $2 pledges and I'm not going to increase the amount I pay by 40% because Patreon decided to bill everything separately

If there's any alternative way of sending you money each month that is still linked to bonus strips, please let us know. Will absolutely switch over to that instead of patreon.

Canceled all my pledges. Maybe these jagoffs will get the message if enough people do.

Joshua

Totally agree with your opinion !!!

Okay, maybe not ratafire, I don't know what happened to their site.

Kyuusaku

Dave, have you considered alternatives like Steady or Ratafire?

Kyuusaku

Literally Patreon won't be making more. They can't keep a credit card processing fee that's above their cost, that would incur sales tax in the state they're located (California).
