I think part of Dorothy's attitude right now comes from feeling inadequate when Joyce find other confidants than her

Bagge

If Dorothy could take a step back here, she might ponder why it was Joe's room where she and Becky found Joyce freely venting about her atheism the other day. Why Joyce apparently trusts Joe (and Sarah) enough to be open about something she hadn't even felt comfortable discussing with Dorothy herself. Dorothy and Joyce haven't really had that conversation yet, and they probably need to.

Harold

Dorothy's in kind of an unhealthy headspace in general, and has been since the kidnapping (and probably since the Ryan-skewering before that), although she does a good (TOO good) job of masking it. I think she's being partially triggered right now by the thought of not being able to protect Joyce from Guys Like Joe once she departs for Yale (whatever else might be going on re: her feelings about Joe specifically).

Harold

I'm a big fan of Dorothy's rethorics, but I can't help notice that she puts very high emphasis on oneliners instead of meeting Joe's arguments. Dorothy was not prepared for a Joe in love.

Age of Everyone Makes Rational, Emotionally Mature Adult Decisions wasn’t as relatable and didn’t sell well.

They're both true but Joe's approach is far healthier for Joyce

Joe's really getting the worst of Dorothy's protective instincts here. Intellectually, she should know that a history of consensual casual sex isn't a bad thing. She should know that while predatory men exist, simply sleeping around doesn't make Joe one of them. She should know this all amounts to slut shaming. But she's caught up in her own maternal and/or romantic desires. Hope she doesn't do any permanent damage before sorting that out, but would we have a comic if there weren't lingering plot hooks at the end of every story?

Joe’s got a point, that Joyce isn’t exactly some helpless baby bird who can’t make her own decisions. And given that Joyce recently needed strong-arming to do simple adulting tasks like get glasses so she can see and pass her classes, go to an appointment to get medicine that helps reduce her agonizing period pain, and sign up for and then attend a figure drawing class that will meaningfully improve her comic drawing goal, Dorothy has a point that she kinda IS.

Joe is weirdly out of his element. I'm not sure how to take his panel 4 expression. This kind of possessiveness/defensiveness is also out of character for Dorothy. I haven't really seen the Joyce/Dorothy relationship as having romantic undertones the way that so many shippers here have. It MIGHT be evidence of suppressed feelings, but somehow I'm not vibing that. Dorothy's attitude towards Joyce is somewhere between parent (to a child) and master (of a pet) which something atypically unhealthy for her.

Evidence?

Yeah, it's gonna take a while to break that perception, Joe. She's known you as 'guy who talks about upgrading girls and fixing them with his penis' for four years. She hasn't seen your character development. This is what happens.

I was really wondering how Joe was going to defend himself here when he shares the same doubts about himself that Dorothy has. "Have more faith in Joyce" is a perfect way for him to resolve that.

To be fair the women who go to joe with one night stands KNOW it's a one night stand. Dorothy might be concerned, based on the 4.5 years she's know Joe, that that's what's happening here. It's hard to fix a bad first impression, it can be downright IMPOSSIBLE to fix a bad 4.5 year impression.

"I know EXACTLY what I'm putting my faith in... Joyce's evident bisexuality!"

Gale Tazzin

I think it's interesting the way Dorothy frames Joe's previous partners as "prey" and "conquests". While obviously Joe's behavior towards women is aggressive and often unwanted, it seems like those who do go to bed with him know what they're getting into, and this is as much because of Joe's own desire to be honest about what's happening as it is his tendency to gravitate towards folks like Roz and Malaya who are far too smart for any games to work on them. If Dorothy does see Joe as an out-and-out predator, it's actually a little weird that it's his targeting of Joyce specifically that's getting her goat here!

Seth Aaron Hershman has they she pronouns

I'm assuming she's saying she has *faith* in Joe's ability to be a scumbag to Joyce, but yeah it's not really clear.

Dorothy, quick and deeply rhetorical question: what the fuck are you talking about
