Interesting point. The succession of backgrounds shows that they're walking along, but there's nothing except Ethan's expression and your observed metaphor to show that he's stopping in his tracks.

They're both very different people than they were in the fall, and it would be fascinating to see their interaction. (It couldn't go worse than Ethan's post-timeskip encounters with Amber, Danny, and Walky.)
