I think there’s more to her decision than just that.

"9 Chickweed Lane Classics" is about as textbook a definition of "oxymoron" as one could imagine.

Harold

Okay, I KNOW this is off-topic, but I encourage both David Willis and everybody else who hate-reads 9CL to go to today's "9 Chickweed Lane Classics" strip and read it. Turns out, a certain phrase that rhymes with "Joe Cleavage" is more universal, in the context of the strip, than we thought! (Sorry to post this HERE, but I don't have twitter and can't tag the good Willis there.) That is Classics, not the current 9CL strip.

With all due respect to Dorothy's good intentions, by that logic you could almost never give promotions to nurses, or to anybody else in the medical field.

Rob McBobson

As I think Billie once said, Dorothy won't be president, but more likely an intermediate appeals court judge.

I think you are correct, "responded in the affirmative" is a valid form and the one I would usually employ. But as you say, it could be a form we do not recognize.

Simon Magid

Hope this isn't taken the wrong way given the weight of this comic, and I suppose "one day before publication" might already be too late but just in case: it's "responded in the affirmative", right ? Or is this a construction I'm unaware of ?

Three more days to finish storyline, as Willis has promised it will be extended. My bet is one more for Dothy-Becky and two more for Joyce.

DON'T LET YOUR SURVIVER'S GUILT DETERMINE YOUR FUTURE, DOTTY!

Bagge

Please, Becky. Use your Poli-science to shove some truths tor her.

Amós Batista

I hadn't thought through the possibility that Dorothy might be concocting a lie (just after discussing honesty with Becky), but it's consistent with her turning her back, which conceals her face from Becky while she works on her story. This being an excuse is also consistent with the fact that considerations from the kidnapping don't figure into her monologue on the dryer. Taking your point further, it could be that Dorothy doesn't want to reveal the extent to which she is reconsidering her ambition. Doing so would be analogous to Amazi-Girl ceasing her crime-fighting, in that both are recognizing the personal costs of their idealism. It's a complex strip, and there's nothing wrong with entertaining more than one theory at a time!

Dan Rabin

That's an excuse, Dorothy, and you know it. (It's also completely ridiculous and I wouldn't be surprised if Becky says exactly what I'm about to say in the next strip.) People dying wasn't going to be the reason you got ahead, and you know it. It was more people NOT dying because of YOUR actions that you got acknowledged. Now: the real reason, please.

I think most successful politicians are willing to accept credit for successful crisis leadership -they were physically present for-. If Dorothy can’t toot her own horn when she was literally there, she’s missing some politician skills. And if she doesn’t like the feeling of lives lost on her watch or even gaining advantage from situations where people died, I’ve got bad news about being POTUS. POTUS sees lives lost all the time, in natural disasters and in military actions they themselves ordered. And yes you need to get ahead based on those things and say they were the right course of action. It’s what people expect of leadership. I think Dorothy can gain these skills. I also think this is untreated survivor’s guilt. Did Dorothy decline counseling? I seem to recall Amber did, implying everyone was offered therapy, since they were felony kidnapped and witnessed a murder and lost a friend. Not wanting leadership because it’s kind of bullshit is reasonable, but is it the choice Dorothy would make once she works through her PTSD? She’s helped Joyce with Joyce’s mental block, but can she lead herself through her own? Maybe Becky will help. (PS plus she’s still a college freshman and not expected to be at full power yet, there’s a reason you have to be at least 35 to be POTUS)

Shane Wegner

I think when she reapplied she thought that she was just benefiting from what she did (which also is a coping mechanism to not have to feel everything that had happened), and then when she received the acceptance everything else that happened came through. I'm pretty sure she has just as bad of PTSD as the rest, but by taking are of everyone else she's not realizing it.

Oh, oh Dorothy.
