2023-06-07 05:09:11 +0000 UTCOn the one hand, Joe went against Joyce's stated wishes here, which kind of sucks. On the other hand, he has feelings too, rooted in his personal experience, and Joyce said that part of why she wanted him to be the one supporting her here is said experience. So, she gets the baggage that comes with that. (And, as others have said, he's 100% right in what he's saying.) It's also interesting to me to see that the one feeling he's willing to not just admit, but passionately and uncontrollably yell about, is anger. It ties into the macho narrative that anger is the only acceptable feeling for men to have. He may have turned over a new leaf, but old habits die hard. Also, I love how in the first panel he found something nice to say to Carol that he really means -- that this daughter she raised is wonderful. He may be lying about being delighted to meet her, but rather than making up some bullshit complement to back that up, he realizes that he does have one nice thing to say, and he says it.
