Going full Martin Luther, I see.

I think that after everything, there was still a part of Joyce that hoped that she could bring her mother back from the indoctrination and salvage SOMETHING of their relationship. Until Carol’s dismissal of how she and the church are responsible for Mike’s death. So the pause before “God isn’t real Mom” was Joyce realising that Carol is too far gone and so bracing herself, consciously or not, to start the process of going full no-contact with her.

That's right, nail those demands to the church door

Well, that's the problem with God letting Pastor Beardo put his name on the lease!

Grace Kieser

That right there is one of the reasons I left the church. I actually believed in mercy and grace, but it seemed no one else I knew did.

God is all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money!

With my Christian upbringing I was taught about things such as kindness, Caring, Humility, and Love for the people around me along with some other stuff. When I grew up though I noticed that there was a large scale of people who claimed to have similar beliefs as me but clearly lacked all the values I grew up with. Carol feels like one of those people who never truly understood or just straight up never really believed in what she was preaching.

Carol is truly alone. Her family who’s decent has cut ties with her. She probably doesn’t have real friends outside her precious church, and now her devotion is more important than her relationship to Yeshua and God.

When you delete all contrary opinions out of hand, your own feel delightfully uncomplicated.

Her mom's response to "Mike Died because of them" was to say that the church was more important than any individual. Yeah I'd say God isn't real to that too.

Fun fact, the Bible never says you need to go to Church, or that a Church is even needed, you just need to get together every now and then in an assembly. They could easily do this at a public park, a rec center, or even just at each others homes, but then that would negate all the donations now wouldn't it?

If It Bleeds

Notice how she says "our church" is more important than anything or anyone. Not "our God," or "our faith" or even "our religion." Our church. The tangible symbol of belonging, the dividing line between us-versus-them, the physical building. When a building is more important than keeping your family in your life, you've hit a new kind of low. Now more than ever I want to know what prodigal brother Jordan is off doing, I think.

Tactically speaking, Joyce's "God isn't real" feels like a misstep. She had little chance of swaying Carol on anything in any case, but arguing from Scripture the way she did with Ross seems like it might have a 2% chance instead of the current 0.3%. But I'm not really faulting Joyce for it: she is in no position to think tactically right now. Emotionally, the part of her that loves Carol and the part that at least wants to think Carol's RATIONAL are pushing her to be honest. (If not for those parts, I don't think she'd phrase it so openly.)

T Campbell

Even if she didn't mean it, I wouldn't want to believe Carol's version of God was real either

Believe it, ya dried up old gunch.
