BONUS STRIP FOR JULY 2023

Comments

Not yet widely acknowledged, but living facing a highway actually causes major health issues; it's not just quality-of-life downgrade. In addition to the pollution (which the apartment probably doesn't ventilate well), constant street noise is significantly associated with dementia.

Minivet

And apparently Hank has not taken the dog. :(

Lynne B.

The problem is that she already has a dog. It's not a question of which pet to adopt, it's a question of whether or not to abandon the pet she already has. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you don't agree with her about that one...

Lisa

Oh no I actually agree with Carol on something?? (Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike dogs, but I do really like cats, and quiet living spaces)

Chelsea Kenna

Carol is looking rather - butch - here. Significant? That would be a twist.

J. Steven York

Depends on who's name is on the title

Corzican

Wait a minute: this John's Mustang could help to get q better house, huh? (https://www.dumbingofage.com/2016/comic/book-6/03-when-god-closes-the-door/trendy/)

Amós Batista

It's definitely not something you want to face. Usually facing the highway means there's no trees out your window and yes, noise.

Mike Tremblay

Is the highway something you want to face, or what's the significance of mentioning that? I would assume highway is very noisy

jaaama

Probably her dentist father! Also, Joyce has already spent one semester break with Becky (https://www.dumbingofage.com/2020/comic/book-11/01-this-bright-millennium/oneofthose/), so she can probably crash there for the summer, too, if dad isn't an option.

C Bonesmith

Darn, I guess she is not homeless after all. So Joyce will be able to crash on the floor of this dump for a few days if needed when her dorm kicks her out between semesters. Hopefully Joyce will have other options. Who is paying her tuition?

Vanessa Pinter

probably not in La Porte, though

David Willis

I do enjoy the 'facing the highway' bit, but I sorta wish Carol had an 'el' running by her bedroom window also.

ValdVin

Is this proof that the sale went through? Damn, I hoped that she wouldn’t be able to do it for legal reasons or something. 🫥

Stathis N.

It's what she deserves.

Beck(y) Chonigman

There's something different about the color scheme on this, I think. The colors seem a bit deadened in a way that feels quite appropriate for Carol. Or maybe it's fluorescent lights?

Lisa

no separate kitchen. at least the fridge door opens the convenient direction.

HueStL

Even if Hank took the dog, she's a MONSTER

Fart Captor

Yep, house hunting is like that

BBCC

the weird thing about love is you don't have to like or even respect someone to love them. and that's probably for the best, even if it's very inconvenient sometimes

Elizabeth Story

I got very sad reading this strip. Like, what If I really left my mother or father behind? All my relatives have abandoned her. Cannot I lend a hand for her, sometimes? I know Carol deserves it, but my heart sank a little for her, seen her in this situation. I can't stop thinking about this strip.

Amós Batista

Just draw a little time machine Snoop can take back to the early 50s and dovetail the third-hand homage into early Peanuts. His bizarre appearance in the past can be the result of the ordeal of time travel. EDIT: Li'l Folks, of course. Not Peanuts. IBUA. EDIT 2: Damnit, okay, based on the first named appearance, it would be Peanuts, despite existing in prototypical forms throughout the late 40s in Li'l Folks. The returns are ever-diminishing.

J.

That contemplative panel will fuel an eventual week of other bonus strips. People are getting ready to request "Carol's thoughts during the pause" in the next poll, then later when it's actually okay to do so.

J.

I hope you are having a better life now than then.

davidk

I will draw myself into the strip in order to save the dog

darklion

My mom did all the stuff during my parent's divorce that Carol's done and more. Looks like she'll be pulling the "getting rid of beloved pet" trick too which my mom managed to do multiple times. This stirs up some settled emotions but it's also validating to see. My mom put a lot of it on me, much like Carol: if I don't take the cat, she goes away. If I don't take boxes of childhood stuff, they go in the trash. If I don't take the family heirloom, it's getting sold. It's nice to see it treated as bonkers/shitty by both the writer and the readers, because I really blamed myself.

Christina

Unless she just dumps the dog by the side of the road and drives away. :( Selling it would actually be the better option.

Angie Penrose

I've not heard of an apartment like that with central air. I would guess that if it does have central air, it's for the whole building and Carol doesn't have access to the thermostat. So the temp it's set for is based on how hot it is somewhere else.

Buddha Buck

Willis, I find your willingness to give Carol central air conditioning disturbing. She should have to deal with self-installed window units. I only pray Hank gets Snoop. Maybe I'll have to start suggesting Snoop in the poll just so we know what happened to him.

Packy Anderson

I really don't understand the way this fandom votes on these things.

MysteryCow218

How is Joyce going to keep a dog at IU? Snoop's either going to Hank, the ex-husband who defies the Lord's Will, or the kill shelter, because Lord knows dogs don't have souls so they don't go to heaven. Edited to add: *I* know dogs go to heaven, I was channelling uber-Christian Carol and my aunt-in-law who was agog that I said "excuse me" to a cat while I was moving it out of my seat.

Packy Anderson

Carol is just evil enough she would dump Snoop in a shelter to deny Hank getting him.

Packy Anderson

She doesn't have cats, only a dog Snoop she's abandoning.

Packy Anderson

Ugh why did Carol win this is an awful person

Lyman Green

Thus cheaper.

Damien

Really, facing the highway? Sounds a house too noisy to me.

Amós Batista

Joceline better hide her cat.

Amós Batista

"Facing the highway"... sounds restful.

Donald Boettger

I STG Snoop /BETTER/ go to Hank or Joyce.

Gwen Sanger

"God told me to put down the family dog."

Ed Marshall

She really went through with selling her child's family home to save the church in spite of all the pain it caused. I detest her in ways that I can't even describe.

Justin Seifert

…She's going to sell the dog, isn't she. Damn it all

A. B. Cianchetti

I hope she has upstairs neighbors with a bunch of kids who they allow to just run wild.

Uniquitous

I hope this means Hank will get the dog and not that she's just going to dump him in a shelter

Darastrix

This is sad and pathetic. She now has no friends or family. Just cats.

Andrea Andrew

Carole is the worst.

Andrea Andrew

Carol is the dog

Drazi

So help me, if the Browns have a dog that Carol is just going to throw out…
