One litmus test for me is whether he's willing to accept support in the other direction. We've seen limited examples of that, but so far I think the evidence says that their support is mutual. https://www.dumbingofage.com/2023/comic/book-13/04-but-dont-give-yourself-away/support-3/ is the main example I can think of; they're both having a lot of Feelings and Joyce is patient and understand when Joe's Feelings disrupt their plan for how the encounter with her mom was supposed to go. I agree with you that he's working hard to be helpful. But she seems pretty happy about what she's getting, and I think he respects her enough to notice and pull back if he crosses the line into providing unwelcome help. (I'm probably also misreading your comment as a criticism, when you may have just meant it more as an observation.)

And BTW, Joyce is an atheist, and Dina and Becky are having sex. 3. The last panel contains both a punch line and a burger whose buns have been smooshed thinner than the other burger's, which graces the firm-yet-measured grip of, er, SETH's powerful-but-sensitive manly hands on his thick patty of meat.
