Abstractly, we're seeing yet another example of author Willis taking a character defined by a schtick and writing a story that files off the edges to make them human like us. Mike, the eternal cynical asshole, fell in love, and died nobly. Sal, the aloof motorcyclist, traded the bike for flowers and a boyfriend. Joe is no longer the caricature of promiscuity he started as, and there is much to say of Joyce, of course. It often works to let go of what you think makes you special and let other people bring your actual specialness to the surface.
