Clearly something awkward was being teed up by Sarah's line in panel 4, but I have no memory of how Joe and Joyce's arrival would've specifically satisfied it. Maybe that's why I started completely over with this, I dunno:

I think it shows character growth for Walky to have him not immediately brag to Lucy, that he stood up to his parents *for himself* as much as for her. This way, it reads like he's waiting for her to decide if she cares and giving her space in case she doesn't instead of assuming she wants him to prove his mettle
