Joyce has grown up living inside religion as a comforting system to the point that she has made up rules for how to be a teenager that actual teenagers don't follow. If she's on the autism spectrum, systems of rules are easier than observing and interpreting the behavior of others. If that's the correct background here, then David Willis might be showing us that Joyce's rigid adherence to the false system may have been reinforced by the romantic disappointment she's prey to here (she may indeed harbor a rigid notion that her years of nurturing a crush in Tristan give her dibs). The characters look about sixteen here, so this is only about two years before the main time-frame of the comic. The Joyce we first meet is very much husband-hunting under the made-up rules she's alluding to here.
