I'm pretty sure Lucy is greeting Jacob out of general friendliness and helpfulness, but our author often keeps several possibilities going, people being complex and all that. We could imagine Jacob thinking about the contrast between Sarah the puzzle-person and Lucy, who just walked right up and shook his hand. He will find her to be a considerate, interesting church-going Christian woman.... check, check.

On the other, I find it so heartwarming that she's showing Sarah this kindness, when it would have been so easy to write Sarah off after their last conversation.
