She's mourning her crush. There was probably never a real chance of her and Tristan getting together, but she liked the fact that he was out there anyway. He was her first love, and while he was too secular for her when they were kids, maybe the fantasy of being with him gained more appeal as she herself got more secular and able to handle a relationship. (TBC, it was still a fantasy: I doubt she'd think of leaving Joe for Tristan.) But now that fantasy is completely dead, and all she can do is look sadly at its corpse

Funny story, I actually went to the college in my hometown, and she came to a party I was at once, me completely drunk, and just talked with me for like 10 minutes. She's the sweetest person I've ever met, one of the real walk the walk Christian's about "love thy neighbor", so her seeing me drunk had me somehow feeling completely awful.
