SECOND BONUS STRIP FOR AUGUST 2022

Comments

I'd like that cognitive dissonance there in a strip, actually.

C.T. Phipps

Huh, you're right. I interpreted the transition from imagination to reality as a "later that day", but no, the thought bubble is linked to Dina now. Whoops.

Daibhid Ceannaideach

It doesn't look like this is being depicted as a dream - it's a daydream. It's what's in Dina's mind as she's talking to Becky. It does make sense that this is how Dina thinks of Joyce, especially when she's annoyed with her. ("That is my secret, Becky. I am ALWAYS annoyed with Joyce.")

Harold

As Samuel Wilberforce once wrote: If I were a cassowary On the plains of Timbuctoo, I would eat a missionary, Cassock, band, and hymn-book too. Although, ironically, Wilberforce was a Christian who didn't believe in evolution. (Although a lefty Christian by the standards of the mid-19th century.)

Daibhid Ceannaideach

Counterpoint - it's a *dream*. I had a dream the other night where my nephew was six years old. That doesn't mean nobody's told me he's aged a decade since then. Joyce's religious stuff was the first way she annoyed Dina, so it makes sense that her subconcious would still see it as "what Joyce is like when she's being annoying", even if she knows otherwise.

Daibhid Ceannaideach

DINA: And then she’d say “O, by the eight disciples of Christ or whatever—“ BECKY: No, no, Dina, uh, Joyce don’t believe in God anymore. (Also it’s twelve.) But, yeah, she…she actually thinks I’m dumb for still believing. So… DINA: …Ah. Hm. [Beat.] DINA: “O, by the eight worst tweets of Richard Dawkins or whatever—“ BECKY: Ooh, better! :D

Sajuuk-Khar

I mean, this imagined version of Joyce is also apparently homophobic, which she mostly hasn't been pretty much since Becky came out, so I think what we're learning here is that Dina kinda just doesn't like Joyce.

Sean Murphy

I think less about "what problems can't be solved by murderbirds" and more think about "what problems won't be solved by murderbirds." Attitude goes a long way in problem solving. Murderbirds have no interest in doing my taxes, cleaning my room, or taking out the trash. Could they? That's not really relevant when we know the answer to "Would they?" is "No. Hell no. They'd rather murder you instead."

Some Ed

I don't think that looking at an ostrich from much closer would do anything to make them seem less scary. To be clear, I'm not going to be testing my hypothesis.

Some Ed

...Clever girl.

Rich

Anyone who thinks feathered dinosaurs aren't scary has never looked an ostrich in the eye. From a distance. Well behind the fence.

Carl Cravens

Well, it's hard to move when your best friend's girlfriend is literally sitting on top of you... (Speaking of which, nice touch to have Dina's imaginary-Joyce saying "Awaken!" just as Dina did to Joyce in real life.)

Harold

It’s fun how Joyce has come a long way but at the same time hasn’t really moved much

Daniel Adams

The way that the cassowary is so well-rendered gives this a distinct "dinosaurs in a Calvin & Hobbes strip" vibe that I love.

Greg Cashman

Such.

Edwin I Callahan

Again, this is totally a premise-busting wish, but I’d like to see Dina implement some of her threats, suck as the cassowary or time traveling to prevent Becky being ‘disciplined’ as a child. Maybe Dina and Carla could do science together…

Edwin I Callahan

The Australian army fought a war against emus. The emus won.

Robert Wilson

Dina really does amazing dreams, expecially against her "enemies".

Pierpaolo Di Camillo

New Guinea and the Aru Islands of Indonesia too... and no, you do not want to mess with them, because they will f*** you up.

Mark

Oh. My. God. This comic alone is worth the price of Patreon.

H. Jameel al Khafiz

I went to see Jurassic World: Dominion the other day. A few of the dinosaurs there had feathers, and they were plenty scary.

Rob McBobson

The encyclopedia Shanetannica entry on cassowaries: Big birds, basically raptor derivatives. They're from Australia I think. Will straight up murder you if things go wrong. "You should be wary of the cassowaries." Related media: A news article about an exotic pet owner being executed by their cassowary. Some YouTube videos of people not being murdered by cassowaries, but them walking up pretty intimidating-like.

Shane Wegner

Possibly showing a lack of knowledge on Dina's part as much as anything.

Katrina Marie Paton

Nice point. This caricature’s actions and face are pure adorable Joyce but their words are pure hate filled Mary.

Vanessa Pinter

As hilarious as this is, it's further evidence (bonus strips ARE canon, and Joyce's glasses indicate that this is the present) that Becky hasn't yet told Dina that Joyce is now an atheist (yet another secret that one character is keeping from another), possibly because Becky still thinks it's just a phase that Joyce needs to get over. She can accept Dina and even Dorothy as atheists because she's never known them as anything else.

Harold

Daydream Joyce only counting the disciples from John or whatever.

HueStL

Maybe an emu, instead?

kaitou

Welp, RIP Joyce, I guess. Figuratively and literally if that cassowary has its way

BBCC

I positivity SQUEALED with delight at this

Fart Captor

There are problems that can't be solved by murderbirds (I can't think of any on top of my head, but still)

Bagge

I feel murder birds can be quite educational. I just don't feel it is Joyce who is in the biggest need of one. Now Mary on the other hand...

Simon Magid

Yeah, you're awesome Dina, but give Joyce a little credit...of course, if the comic is going the way it looks, Dina may realize just how much she's changed in regards to sapphic love.

C

I'm glad Dina is at least checking first with Becky as to whether or not Joyce should be educated by means of a murder bird.

Rubia

I know there's some friction between Joyce and Dina, but it surprises me to see Dina imagining Joyce being homophobic. That was the first big change in Joyce, and I feel like it was mostly complete by the time she and Dina started interacting on a regular basis (Becky being a major catalyst for both).

Gabriel Burns

Yes Dina, it would be out of bounds. Cassowaries are endangered!
