Why do I get the feeling that this is a criticism Willis got when he started taking life drawing classes?

Are they still doing the fifteen second drawings? If so, Joe has got a crazy good amount of detail there.

Joe, she didn't mean your actual manboobs. She meant the idealized version from inside of your head.

Joyce did tell him to avert his eyes

Wouldn't that mean that he isn't really looking at the woman's breasts? If he has a critical eye for the rest of her anatomy, he's specifically avoiding it.

She's speaking a specialized variant of what Hyde says in this strip: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2018/comic/book-8/03-faz-is-great/wrest/

This strip reminds me of the interaction between Mary and Malaya in the art class, where Mary keeps drawing the same anime man from her head, and Malaya is learning to draw what she sees.
I took one (non-figure) drawing class once, and this is the big, big lesson that I can remember decades later. For me, the equivalent of this strip was the instruction commenting on my self-portrait that there is no circle around the iris of an eye: there's a *boundary* between the pigmented area of the iris and the white of the sclera, and a proper drawing doesn't place a mark on that boundary.

I feel like Joyce's criticisms have solid artistic merit! It takes a lot of skill to draw what's literally there vice from mental symbols.

Joe's face in panel 6 is highly reminiscent of Becky's when she's at her "ain't-I-a-stinker?" snarkiest, and Joyce replying in kind is just wonderful. As is everything else here, including Joyce's informed critique.
