I am probably never getting fully on the Carla train I see here all the time but.. the needle has inched a few ticks from “dislike” to “like”

We've seen Joyce leaning in from the side of a panel before, IIRC. It's a comic-art way of showing her not to be committed to being where she's poking into. 3. These two have some common experience in not fitting in where they find themselves. 4. Carla has been learning to treat Charlie with patience and understanding. Those skills may be applicable more widely in Carla's circle.

"You mean the weird way you act around me is entirely because of who YOU are, and has nothing to do with who I am?" Of course, now that Joyce knows, she's probably going to start peppering Carla with incessant and more-than-borderline-offensive questions. But Carla will know that her heart is in the right place. Hopefully.
