Unused strip for September 4, 2024

Look, it's the original unused version of today's strip! okay so it looks a little familiar

I wrote it, and though I thought it was a good, necessary interaction between Joe and Joyce, I worried that it'd change the vibe of the rest of the storyline's strips. And so I tried a less on-the-nose, more funny version:

Breaches the topic, but leaves things at a place where I can more-seriously follow up on it later! Maybe! I dunno. Hrm. No.

So I rewrote the last two panels to be entirely different. Now it's just a continuation of Walky/Dorothy's conversation. Hi, Jacob!

And so this was going to be the published version of this strip for... seven months. Just sitting on my hard drive and uploaded to the website, like this. And then it got time for it to go up, and I remembered I had those original versions, and I sat down, and thought about it, and showed Maggie the early versions, and she thought the Joe/Joyce panels were better. And with the perspective of 8 months of buffer past this strip, I decided the Joe/Joyce panels worked fine and wouldn't actually wreck the rest of the storyline.

And Maggie preferred the on-the-nose version, so I went for the actual original strip, and literally yesterday I drew the two final panels as we saw them.

Because while I thought I'd swing back and put that moment in somewhere else, in 8 months, I did not! And it's probably a smidge more important than Jacob rubbing Lucy's awesomeness in Walky's face. As much as I enjoyed it.

Comments

honestly happy we got the other, Jacob is a good character but i don't think his comment is earned especially after kinda playing the field too with Sarah but didn't tell her he wasn't feeling her or didn't find what he was looking for in her. Walky fucked up but at least he told her how he felt and even though it ended in a breakup and Lucy getting her backbone/boundaries to say what she wants and not falling to her old self

Bronxden

I do like the Jacob and Walky, but I'm glad you went with the one you did. It seems to fit the flow of the story (enhance the warp and weft of the narrative, if you will ๐Ÿ˜ˆ) better than the alternatives.
