Good on Sarah for doing an honest attempt. You know what, good on Sarah even if she's just being ironic. She can deal with shit however she wants. But I have to wonder just what kind of insult the universe will throw her way today to make her attempt at trusting, amicable and open go up in flames

She needs someone she can open up to (with less baggage involved than with Jacob), because everyone needs that sometimes, and she made it pretty clear that part of her interest Jacob was sheer horniness, and she's not really the kind of person to sublimate that need for relief. It doesn't have to be a romance for the ages, just enough to give her some close human contact and occasionally get her rocks off. (It'd also save her from fixating on the feeling that she screwed up with Jacob.)

It wasn’t just Jacob at the party and subsequently; her so-called friends basically ignored her feelings. This attempt is her response to hitting rock bottom; trying to fight her way back up is better than the alternative.

2024-09-07 10:34:47 +0000 UTCI feel like this is a good conversation for Sarah to have (re: I want to try and be more personable/social to not drive people I like away, but also find doing so exhausting). Just not with Jacob. But I can also appreciate that Sarah might not want to have this conversation with other people in her social orbit at the moment, especially with how most of them just kinda went "well this is weird, but bye I have my own stuff" just now. And so Jacob being the only to actually try and have it with her might be better than nothing. Mostly want to wait and see where the rest of this conversation goes first.

2024-09-07 07:35:49 +0000 UTCIts kind of hard to take what Jacob is saying here as caring though, beyond himself. He immediately makes it clear this is never going to win him over. Sarah responds that she realizes that but obviously if people don’t like the real her, then she has to change who the real her is, even if it eats at her mental health to get there. So now the issue for him judging by that last panel is she should be the real her but which is it? If it’s not good enough to interest people Sarah has a genuine interest in, she should just be grumpy and alone? I get that maybe Jacob is of the mind that you should be your most honest self…but Jacob also has the privilege of being a walking Adonis, conventionally attractive, a natural sunny disposition and someone people genuinely want to get to know.

I read this as him both caring about Sarah and understanding her well enough to ask the right questions and figure out what's really going on. It comes across as much more thoughtful than "check her eye dilation because she must be having a stroke." Everyone noticed that something was off about Sarah, but Jacob is the one who's investing the time and emotional energy to check in in a meaningful way rather than a flippant way. Moreover, he's understandably suspecting that she might still be trying to win his sexual interest, and he wants to make sure he's not leading her on now that he's figured out he's definitely not interested.

Full marks to the art in the last panel, which shows that this is indeed costing her a lot of effort, and it really can’t last.
