@Onyx: I believe she's thinking that her husband would, to quote an old series of profane parodies of another comic strip, "set sail for dick"

Harold

EDIT: Based on the comic linked above by Lisa, there's a third option. If Ethan's dad was gay (based on his language probably not bi) but married Naomi, and she wasn't aware, but found out later, that explains a whole lot. It's not an excuse for her, but if she ended up feeling trapped in a marriage with a man who couldn't fully love her because he was gay, being bitter makes sense. (Note: There are lavender marriages, and there are marriages where one knows the other is queer and is ok with it, but there are also marriages where one got married and had a kid to prove they were straight, which can be brutal for both parties. This is also often why there is a high rate of pregnancy among queer kids because (very often subconsciously) what better way to prove you are straight? I wonder if they were married when she got pregnant?) (The link above didn't work for me, so here it is again https://www.dumbingofage.com/2013/comic/book-3/04-just-hangin-out-with-my-family/blunt/) Original: WOW. That is a big realization. I'm curious which way she is thinking her husband would go - accepting, or would rather a dead son than a gay son.

Onyx

Baby steps. Sure, she isn't an ally, but she's incrementally better than she was the day before. One of the best now-allies I know was a conservative bigot until she heard her 4 year old, who was ADAMANT that she was a girl, not a boy, and was going to WAR with her mother over it, praying to "go live with Jesus" (as in, praying to die). She decided she'd rather have a daughter who was alive than a son who's dead.

Berry

It's either that or that he'll decide the solution to having a gay son is to have an un-alive son. But we've already been down that road in this comic, so I think I like your interpretation better.

Jim Farmer

Does she worry that her husband will get the idea it's okay for him to be gay if she's allowing it for their son? 'Cause that's what the wording suggests to me...

Steve McSheffrey

Isn't there some reason to believe that Saul is indeed gay (and painfully repressing it)?

Phil_M

A FOUNTAIN OF CARE THIS WOMAN IS, CLEARLY!!!

Beck(y) Chonigman

Ok is she implying Saul is gay or is she implying he'd drive Ethan to death? Cause I can see it go either way.

Olivia Cheatham

I appreciate so many things about this strip. Am intrigued to see what's next.

You know…Willis, given how shit the parents are in Asher’s relationship circles in particular, the funniest possible move would be, when we meet Grandpa Park, for him to be an unfailingly kind, wholesome and accepting old guy Just like, clearly loves Asher, the money thing is water under the bridge (family is more important!), hugs Ethan and treats him like family, actually contrite over the death of Mike and the abuse Stacey endured (“if I’d known what a rat Blaine was at home I’d have dealt with it sooner”), etc. Just a really nice guy who happens to be a crime lord

"You can have some gayness, as a treat."

Giant Speck

The sad thing is that the bar is so low for parental behavior in this comic that I'm actually pleasantly surprised ... Not to say she's being a good mom here, because she's still got a long way to go for that, but she isn't being, y'know, MAXIMALLY bad.

Lindsey Bockhorst

hey wait did naomi just out saul to ethan

Seth Aaron Hershman has they she pronouns

Naomi, you’re an incredibly funny bit, but as a person you can get right in the trash
